#EconSky Capital controls would be more effective than tariffs at reducing the US trade deficit. Discuss

Report with an image of your favourite James Bond (wrong answers only)

Much of the commentary on the fallout from Mr #Trump’s #tariffs seems to be looking at the effects on financial markets and wondering if this will affect the real #economy. But this is a case where the tariff shock affects the real economy and markets are responding to anticipated real impacts. No?

The poor and the vulnerable risk being overlooked in escalating trade tensions. While the need for trade reform is clear, @unctad.bsky.social stresses that the solution must come through dialogue and negotiation. Full story ▶️ ow.ly/wFs450VuWgB

Has anyone done an analysis of what the #Trump #tariffs will mean for US GDP in 15 years time? #EconSky

Don’t try to make policy based on Econ 101. It’s more complicated than that.

There is a form of economic nationalism that is not about tariffs or trade but about developing an economy where the surplus generated in the country serves the wellbeing of the people whose work creates the wealth.

Liz Truss tried her best but, as with so many things, if you want something done properly, you need to get the Americans to do it.

Maybe just do that anyway.

This is what we do. #UKeconomy

Who cares about bilateral trade deficits? #EconSky Here is a thought experiment:

This is what Trump's "economists" say about how they calculated the "reciprocal" tariffs. Don[t be fooled by the equation. They commit countless crimes against economics. ustr.gov/issue-areas/... +

Just finished this old but highly relevant book. Non-violence is a philosophy of resistance. It becomes even more meaningful in dark times when there is much to resist. #NonViolence

Ultimately on Le Pen: if you value the rule of law, you have to back this outcome. She was found guilty and is barred from office. Yes she can appeal - rightly - and this ought to be heard ASAP. But this ought to be framed as nothing short of a disaster for Le Pen.

Exactly. The story here is a corrupt politician brought down by the law. It needs to happen more often.
