BREAKING: The #AssociatedPress has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, saying it's acting to defend its "indepedance from government control." (Note: WUKY is an AP customer and we utilize AP reporting in our newscasts.)

And they're off... The race is on to claim McConnell's seat. Here are some of the likely (and long shot) contenders.

Originally pitched as the "Homenibus" bill, KHOA would use $100 million from the state's rainy day fund to increase housing supply and expand affordable housing options. (Per @claywallace.bsky.social)

From monuments to moments of silence, religion — and questions about discrimination — are at the heart of a number of Kentucky bills advancing in the General Assembly.

It's a theme in recent Kentucky legislative debates — "aligning with federal standards" versus "rolling back protections." The latest variation? Workplace safety rules. #KYGA25

"For #McConnell to end his career is sort of a punctuation mark on the 20th Century Republican Party and an announcement that the new Trump-era Republican party really has taken power," UK political scientist Stephen Voss says.

The end of an era. #MitchMcConnell

BREAKING: Sen. Mitch #McConnell is announcing that he won’t seek reelection next year. Stay tuned to 91.3 and wuky.org for updates.

Yes, we take walks. On a leash. In the snow.

Kentucky school districts are hitting their NTI limit - but the winter weather keeps coming. Enter "calamity days." (via @claywallace.bsky.social)

Could a Kentucky bill could take key evidence off the table in air pollution cases? Supporters say that's not the intent, but critics see negative effects downwind. #KYGA25

Beshear's first ask is that the GOP-led General Assembly roll back a recent change it made, putting a ceiling on emergency dollars spent without additional legislative approval. Republicans argue it's a necessary check on spending and more funds are available. #KYGA25

Part of a Yorgos Lanthimos film was shot in Kentucky? Not on my bingo card. But so sayeth IMDB.

This, as 2 to 6 inches of snow are expected over the next 24 hours.

The Kentucky version of DOGE has been introduced. #KOGE

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story quoted the governor as saying the weekend flooding was the “worst natural disaster” in state history. He said “one of the worst flooding events.” H/T @kbgpolitics.bsky.social

LEX FORECAST: Winter weather expected from 7 pm to noon tomorrow. 2-5” of snow. Alter half inch Wed night. “Light and fluffy,” not the heavy stuff seen earlier this year. Cold weather advisory from 1 am to 11 am Thursday.

A bill barring cross-sex hormone therapy or surgery for transgender inmates sparked lengthy and fervent debate on the Kentucky Senate floor Tuesday. #KYGA25

Kentucky senators observe a moment of silence for flood victims.

The House has granted final passage to Senate Bill 23, which aims to strengthen legislative oversight of executive branch regulations. (Not to be confused with the bills specifically targeting inmate hormone treatments.)

Me when there hasn’t been any breaking news in the last hour.

Tuesday is the last day for Kentucky senators to file bills during #KYGA25. WUKY’s Alan Lytle and the Kentucky Gazette’s Laura Cullen Glasscock compare and contrast proposals by Fayette County senators.

Kentucky does not currently require tobacco and vape retailers to obtain a license — setting it apart from most states. An effort to create a licensing system is back on the move in the General Assembly. #KYGA25

Kentucky lawmakers are again working to place statewide limits on how long police can keep data captured by license plate readers, like those used in Lexington. #KYGA25

Beshear calls latest floods “worst natural disaster” in Kentucky history. WUKY’s Karyn Czar is on the ground in Pikeville.

There’s only one profession explicitly named and protected from this kind of threat in the Constitution. (Hint: It isn’t the head of DOGE.)

Beshear confirms at least 8 people have died, including one child, due to flooding in Kentucky this weekend.

House Bill 523 would allow homicide charges to be brought against women who obtain abortions.

JUST IN: Newly-filed Kentucky bill would permit prosecution of women who get an #abortion. #KYGA25

A day after Kentucky public schools were told they would have to tighten their belts to make up for a sizable funding shortfall, Gov. Andy Beshear's office authorized an extra $14.7 million.

Got a question about Lexington history? Wayne Johnson should be your go-to guy.

Because I didn’t already have enough #Dune shirts.

“We’re going to be aggressive," Beshear said during his Thursday briefing. "This is funding that the people of Kentucky are owed." #fundingfreeze

Kentucky lawmakers have moved one step closer to formally calling for the return of a Ten Commandments monument to the state Capitol Grounds.

McConnell again goes it alone as he breaks from GOP party ranks to vote against #RFK, Jr.

A measure dealing with the medical treatment provided to transgender inmates has cleared another hurdle — while a more wide-reaching bill regarding the issue has been filed.

BREAKING: Gov. Andy Beshear’s office has joined a federal suit against the #Trump administration over the federal funding #freeze. “We have already seen the harms that this illegal freeze has caused,” he said during his weekly briefing.

Great arts day entertainment in the Capitol today. This place needs some music every day.

#DEI is back under the microscope in Frankfort, with a Republican lawmaker filing a bill aimed at abolishing the programs in higher education.

A bill on the move in the General Assembly would require Kentucky school districts to develop a policy on dyslexia.

"When a nominee’s record proves them unworthy of the highest public trust, and when their command of relevant policy falls short of the requirements of their office, the Senate should withhold its consent," Sen. Mitch McConnell said, regarding his vote against #TulsoGabbard.

As with the Hegseth nomination, Sen. #McConnell chose to split with his party on the #Gabbard vote — citing "alarming lapses in judgment." Again, to no effect, as every other GOP senator voted in favor, handing President Trump another win.

The #NIH cuts are tied up in litigation, but the University of Kentucky is cautioning that the move would slash at least $40 million from the school over the course of a year if allowed to proceed.
