Every time I see a genuinely funny shitpost, the fact checking/serious replies give me despair. Teachers: I think we need to start teaching children how to post, so they don't shame themselves as adults.

What a hollowed-out fucked-up corporate “local news industry” we’ve got, reliant on disillusioned poverty pay graduates rewriting dodgy press releases that are gamed for SEO by a casino, all enabled by Google pushing this shit through its Discover tab. pressgazette.co.uk/news/the-pr-...

would just like the space and the money for a throwing wheel and kiln is that too much to ask

Some personal reflections, at the end of a remarkable expedition... we've seen amazing things, and experienced Antarctica in the depths of its dark winter. We're returning home with an unparalleled dataset, and a deeper appreciation of this awe-inspiring place. www.bas.ac.uk/media-post/r...

Curious: founder of this Turtle Dove release project in 2019 was Bill Makins (turtledovetrust.org.uk/trustees/). In 2021 he wrote to Telegraph opposing reintroduction of White-tailed Eagles, saying "ill-advised reintro programmes are hard to wind back once irreversible damage has been wrought".

In what may be one of Earth’s craziest forms of mimicry, researchers in 2023 reported a species of rove beetle that grows a termite puppet on its back to fool real termites into feeding it. Learn more during #InsectWeek: scim.ag/40mj1S8

Author copies arrived today! A crazy feeling, my daughter couldn't believe a book had my name on it. Now just a few more weeks until it's in shops!

spend a lot of time thinking about @stephenkb.bsky.social's point that "reading comprehension", as a skill, is apparently something that a lot of people have just given up on online - eg it's hard to believe here that so many people can't see this is so obviously tongue in cheek, but alas,

What a fun study! They found 2/3 cats prefer to sleep on their left side as their right brain hemisphere is specialized for threat processing and could give them an advantage in detecting predators. 🐈 🧪 www.cell.com/current-biol...

Here's something helpful you can do today: if your local news outlets didn't make the connection between the current heat wave and climate change, contact them and demand that they do better.

new dino just dropped, and this one is already going on display 👀 🧪🦕 www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/new...

There might be venomous animals living in your garden 👀 New research is suggesting that we should redefine venom so that it would include not only snakes and spiders, but a huge range of common species such as garden snails and aphids 😲 Find out why 👇🏻 www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/new...

Bunch of neanderthals #sciart

does that make these the first wild bears in the UK for 500 years 👀 www.bbc.co.uk/news/videos/...

Still recovering from shock of having just read a large grant application with made-up reference list. Familiar authors but most refs don’t exist. ChatGPT written all over it Must sound familiar to those marking student essays. But, really, in a grant application? Who do they think they’re kidding?

My latest cartoon for @newscientist.com 🧪 #science

Money and health aren’t the only reasons to do things. It’s weird that we all obviously believe this when it comes to our own spending, but not collective investing (taxes) for some reason. Having a worldview based on how reality works seems important to me?

Don't forget to rinse out every jar and tin you finish, guys x

Come see me wrestle with the philosophical conundrum of what we measure and why and how, plus some stuff about geometry that hopefully would bewilder the teacher who kicked me out of high school math!

it is stats like this that really make me realise just how out of sync I am with the general population, and that kind of terrifies me

Say hello to Norman! 👋 He is our only Cuckoo tagged in Scotland this year, in Inversnaid, close to Loch Lomond on 23 May. He’s now crossed the border & is on the Northumberland coast. It will be interesting to see what route he takes from here. Follow his migration ➡️ www.bto.org/cuckoos 🪶

Something really striking about the energy transition in the UK is that, despite having halved our emissions since 1990, very few people are aware of this success - only a quarter of the public think we've made a meaningful difference to cutting our emissions

ok ok so this my favourite study of the year so far! Researchers are arguing we redefine how we think about venom, and in the process have massively opened up what could be considered venomous! 🤯🧪 🪲 Shield bug? Venomous! 🐛 Aphid?? Venomous! 🐌 Garden snail??? VENOMOUS. www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/new...

Rare sightings: In the South Gobi, WCS Mongolia is monitoring how wildlife uses crossing structures at a newly built railway. This is important to improve vital connectivity for these nomadic species. Recently, they caught clips of a rare Eurasian lynx. 🌏

This is my new favorite beetle, an incredible specimen in the genus Lichenophanes (Family #Bostrichidae). Commonly called "powderpost beetles" (their larvae feed on wood). Notice the remarkable scales and beautiful colors on this beetle's chitinous surface #Coleoptera #Invert🪲🪳🌿#entomology #insect

Well this is exciting! Here's an interview I did for @nature.com about #NaturesMemory - talking about how natural history #museums can help save the world, as the best evidence we have for understanding environmental change, plus colonial legacies, male bias, and more: www.nature.com/articles/d41...

these are one of my all-time favourite extinct animals, they're just so freaking weird and cool
