And trans people deserve life and dignity and that everyone must abandon ANY political party that dehumanizes them and scapegoats them. www.thenation.com/article/soci...

“Okay, so I deadass read it but I forgot a lot about it.” I love my students.

In the last couple of decades, private prison companies have diversified their operations - including investing in electronic monitoring and immigrant detention - so they’re less reliant on state and federal incarceration. Their strategy is paying off handsomely. #LegalPlunder

GEO Group Chairman George Zoley said the company stands to gain up to $1 billion in additional revenue from detaining and surveilling undocumented immigrants. New for @theappeal.org.

Room and board: $40 per day Prior balance: $2,751 Total amount owed: $17,071 Due date: 60 days That's what Chad LaVia was told he had to pay after spending a year in a Pennsylvania jail — despite being acquitted of all charges. boltsmag.org/jail-de...

A new MinnJRC report calls for new “intentional release/detain system” rather than cash bail— based on crime severity and risk of new crime; right to counsel at hearings, procedural reforms, and victim services. -Anna Hall, Justin Terrell, @joshpage.bsky.social www.startribune.com/minnesotas-p...

"Transgender people in prison are exceptionally vulnerable to abuse and assault. In one federal study, 37% of incarcerated transgender people reported having been sexually assaulted in prison, versus 3% of everyone else behind bars."

Wrote this ten years ago and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t hold up. washingtonmonthly.com/2015/03/06/w...

"I became a writer as soon as I was in prison. I was sitting in a cell thinking, what am I going to do with these nine years?" In a conversation with PJP, Reginald Dwayne Betts shares how he became a prison poet.

This is the most wretched campaign of deliberate, explicit persecution the United States has perpetrated against a minority group in decades. Many of the most important people in politics and journalism are busying themselves trying to figure out how little to say or do about it.

I grew up in HB and biked to the library as a kid. My family still lives there & loves the library. They’re furious about the MAGAfication of HB—but not surprised given HB’s history of reactionary politics & white supremacy. Thank you, @chriswarcraft.bsky.social for standing up. You’re not alone.

Yes, they are cruel. But they are also willfully ignorant. If they cared to look, they’d see that study after study refutes their deep faith in the deterrent power of the death penalty and monstrous prison conditions.

There have been many lovely pieces about Michael Burawoy recently, but this brief yet moving article by Ruth Milkam really struck me. jacobin.com/2025/02/mich...

Damon Hininger, CEO of private prison giant Core Civic, just told investors: " I've worked at CoreCivic for 32 years, and this is truly one of the most exciting periods in my career ... we're anticipating .. the most significant growth in our company's history." theintercept.com/2025/02/11/c...

One small thing we can do for now, to help set up an infrastructure for organizing: join the @aaup.bsky.social. They have officially declared they will be more aggressive in defending academic rights

This deeply researched piece gives a pretty good set of tools for organizers to mobilize with. Very much oriented toward showing the mechanisms of how dispossession and settler colonialism are working in the real world. Love it. www.hcn.org/articles/the...

Hell yes! Great work, @gladlaw.bsky.social. Please consider supporting GLAD Law. “Judge blocks Trump’s order to send trans women to men’s prisons.”

I think what's being done to trans people in this country is a FUCKING SCANDAL. It's absolutely an attempt at eradicating trans people from public life and ALL OF US must refuse this. Everyone. Stop being a loser mealy mouth person. This is bullshit. You should say so in all the places you inhabit.

Michael Burawoy was a wonderful sociologist and person. We rarely spoke, but we just happened to be emailing in January. He wrote about how much he was loving this phase of his life. The hit and run scourge is taking so many people who have so much more to live www.mercurynews.com/2025/02/04/o...

Such an important piece by James Foreman, and it clarifies something I think and say all the time -- jail time, even (or especially) short stints is worse than doing nothing at all. www.nytimes.com/2025/01/28/m...

Very excited about this! I've been working alongside a group of awesome folks to help get this bill off the ground. It will enshrine visitation for imprisoned Coloradans & their families, which research consistently shows has strong positive outcomes for individuals & communities. Launching Feb 5! 📜

After New Jersey transformed its pretrial system (effectively ending cash bail), the state’s jail population decreased and gun violence remain unchanged. A good counter to the moral panics about “bail reform.”

I've collected accounts from trans folks inside US prisons facing Trump's brutal crackdown: trans women rounded up + placed in solitary before transfer to men's prisons; canceled medical appointments + loss of vital healthcare; vicious taunting "You're going to be a man," one guard told trans women

!!! And don’t forget the electronic monitoring companies that are poised to make huge profits from these anti-immigrant policies. #LegalPlunder

One of the darkest, but less reported, aspects of Trump’s anti-trans order this week IMO is that he directed the DOJ to remove protections for trans prisoners from Prison Rape Elimination Act guidelines. Story at @theappeal.org today from @byadamrhodes.bsky.social: theappeal.org/trump-execut...

A top leader of ICE's Enforcement and Removal Operations arm just left to take a high-paid job for one of the largest American private prison companies. These companies are salivating over the cash they are about to rake in from the Trump administration and the 119th Congress.

Latest: The DEA has ended "consensual encounter" searches at airports after years of watchdog reports, media investigations, and civil liberties groups document how agents seized cash from passengers on evidence-free suspicions of drug trafficking reason.com/2025/01/16/d...

Forcing people to pay for other own incarceration is what happens when reform meets the demands for austerity. Instead of reducing the number of people in jail, they are just forced to pay for their own abuse.

If you don't have laws requiring reporting in areas ripe for police abuse, you probably need to change that.

I had a lot of people asking me so I wrote an explainer: Here's how you can help the incarcerated firefighter battling the blazes in Southern California this week: www.latimes.com/california/s...
