Grinding through this project a bit more tonight so if you need book recommendations, I'm here for you!

For today's #WeirdBookWednesday I'm going wayyyyy back in time. I think one of the big things we as a culture can forget is how WEIRD the stuff we consider mainstream was when it was 1st published. Often it's important now because of how weird it was THEN. Anyway, here's an all timer.

Any authors or illustrators for young people in my feed? docs.google.com/forms/d/13rz...

Our first Be the Change Workshop has been announced! It will be a mending skill share with & in support of of Mutual Aid Medford And Somerville!

Democrats: We intend to fully fund the police. Pundits: "Defund the police" a losing message for Democrats Republicans: We want to wipe out trans people. Pundits: Republicans win by focusing on the working class

And if you're thinking, huh, that's surprising. Interesting maybe, but, like is it important? Just imagine what conservative publishing (and the money it generates!) would look like if publishers fact-checked every book they wanted to market as nonfiction.

kristi noem as porta potties: thread

Far too many people seemed to miss that a chunk of this country interpreted Obama's election as a declaration of civil war. Fox News propaganda frames immigration as an invasion. Which is to say, the people who join ICE believe they are soldiers in a war for America. Which I guess is true.

Wanda Coleman

Doxx everyone in ice and dhs.

NYC: if you can get to Federal Plaza near the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall subway stops, come support Brad Lander, the latest Dem politician to be manhandled/detained by ICE for no legal reason. Zohran Mamdani is there in support of his fellow mayoral candidate. NYT's darling Cuomo nowhere in sight.

Just taking a moment to remind everyone that New England is in garlic scapes and strawberries season. (imo really only fresh tomato season in August can compete)

If your candidate isn't prepared to do this right here, then they are not prepared for the fight ahead. Bottom line. If you think your rep would stand in the way of ICE, you got a good one. If you think your rep wants to "work across the aisle" they're a Republican grifting you.

seen some people complaining that this is a political stunt and lemme say if this was the kind of political stunt more politicians were doing on a regular basis we wouldn't be where we are today dude is actually putting himself on the line here, fuck off with that shit

The Onion has provided more insightful analysis of major events and social issues than the people who are actually supposed to be doing that way way way way way way more times than anyone should be comfortable with. (Except maybe Tim, but I bet he hates that even more than the rest of us.)

i know a lot else is going on, but US folks PLEASE call your senators - they are actively set on trying to ban trans healthcare on Medicaid entirely which trans people like me who are on Medicaid actively depend on for life-saving healthcare

booksellers: if you have david walliams's kids books on your shelf, you can add him to your next return! free up that shelf space for somebody better. www.thetimes.com/uk/media/art...

I was at the protest in NYC the day Powell lied to the U.N. The idea was to rally around the U.N building but there were so many people I don't think my group got within 5,6, or 7 blocks of it.

Don’t rank Cuomo.

Really, really should be clarifying to people, that as soon as it seemed like a progressive had a chance to win the NYC mayoral a whole bunch of capitalists circled the wagons around a sequel harasser who resigned from his last position in disgrace.

Democratic senators need to stop pretending that GOP senators are their “good friends across the aisle” and realize many of them are just lying sociopaths who are actively fanning the flames of violence against them.

Happy #Bloomsday! I'd say the best way to celebrate is by starting a big old joyfully ambitious book today!

What would happen if our elected officials were contacted 3-5 million times this week?

Vote like we’re 10 points behind (and FFS, DON’T RANK CUOMO!)

Seems like a single event attended by 2% of the population is worth front page coverage

LA Area friends, if you've been thinking about learning to play the bagpipes, or just feel like whacking a couple of pans together, here's where to go:

Hi I’m at the rally and can’t independently confirm this info right now but streets are saying this is where to go to keep the fash awake all night tonight

I drew @zohrankmamdani.bsky.social’s rally tonight and if my eyes weren’t wet the whole time. Things are so bleak, fascism is rising, our neighbors are being kidnapped off the streets, but Zohran’s campaign is one spot of light. We really could win. Rank Zohron #1

the story today is of a profoundly low energy military parade being met with millions of americans in nationwide protests denouncing the dictatorial pretensions of the president

Some people questioned the strategy of telling people not to show up in DC and I was not one of those people because the images of the sparsely attended birthday military bullshit parade is exquisite.

I'm not optimistic but today is a great opportunity for political journalism to recognize that the conservative movement is a well bankrolled tiny minority of America able to exploit our electoral structure & leverage a few broader currents of American opinion thru propaganda to hold power.

I'm sorry but the largest protest of my lifetime is not the 7th or 8th biggest news story in the country behind "what does Gen Z want from Instagram?" This shit is humiliating. Rearrange your layout to meet this moment. Omitting the thing happening in every American city is malpractice.

💯 !!!

Went to the Boston No Kings day protest march today. What else can you do but show up when needed the most? 10s of thousands of people in the streets of the city today. Joyous anger if there is such a thing.

I think one of the other emotional challenges of this moment, especially on social media, is sitting with two diametrically opposed emotions at the same time; what I feel seeing the size of the No Kings rallies & what I feel seeing the political assassination in MN.

For anyone who needs it today. Remember, we outnumber the billionaires and the bigots.

If you can't attend the rallies today for whatever reasons, something useful you can do is scour your local news outlets for coverage and share the coverage on social media and pump it out to all of your networks. Amplify what's happening locally so others in your communities are aware.

I can't tell you how invigorating and inspiring and hopeful it is to be in a crowd of people who also care. Took a group of teens to the last big protest and they were most struck by no longer feeling alone. If you're able to go, I encourage you to try. Get a group of friends & go together.

YES

BUT, at the same time it resists limiting cliches of motherhood. I mean... “Now she told herself, in a sort of mantra: “It's alright if you're not sure if you loved her on sight. “It's alright if love feels like a rhythm of reaching and falling short, a reaching out and falling short.”

Been revisiting The Long Form for a project & I cannot stress how fundamentally radical it is. I mean, it treats the ideas and acts of care as just as worthy of deep, intellectual engagement as ideas & acts of power or self. portersquarebooks.com/book/9781948...

local news usually has a public number you can call on their website. they usually have a staff meeting from 7-8am or 730-830am in which they decide where to send reporters & camera crews that day. anyone can call them during that time and tell them to show up somewhere!!

Not everyone can attend protests. If you can't, maybe contact your local news outlets. Ask if they'll be covering the protests in your area. Ask why if they say they're not.
