Huge thanks to @joshuachuminski.bsky.social and the CSPC for being such gracious hosts today and providing such a fantastic platform to discuss my book. Dramatic change is afoot around the world; being in DC at a time like this is… electrifying (in a very complex way).

Author @charleshecker.bsky.social joined me at CSPC today to discuss his fascinating & timely new book “Zero Sum” (@hurstpublishers.bsky.social) about the role of international business in Russia’s economy & what the future could hold for the return of Western companies to the country.

Starting the week off with a bang, re-visiting “The Evolution of Nuclear Strategy” (Palgrave) by my KCL War Studies MA prof. @ldfreedman.bsky.social & Jeffrey Michaels, and a very strong much-needed Americano.

Phew. What a week. Taking a bit of a nonfiction breather (well, aside from the @financialtimes.com Weekend) and indulging in a spot of fiction with Jonathan Coe’s “The Proof of My Innocence” @penguinbooksusa.bsky.social) picked up in Edinburgh at Topping & Company on my last trip.

I'm pleased to share my contribution to the Baltic Defence College’s 2025 Conference on Russia: "Constraints & Frictions on Rapprochement between the United States & Russia". Recent events notwithstanding, there remain systemic obstacles to the president's ambitions. media.voog.com/0000/0051/27...

"Europe is now panicking because it has grown accustomed to the US security comfort blanket, underinvested in defence for years, not heeded what Trump has been saying, nor prepared adequately for his second presidency," writes John Foreman. www.spectator.co.uk/article/euro...

Must read ahead of Macron’s emergency Paris meeting today on security in Ukraine and Europe, by my colleague @shashj.bsky.social : what cards does Europe hold and what does the US really want Donald Trump’s assault on Europe www.economist.com/internationa... @economist.com

“This is only the start of a process where the end is by no means guaranteed, and in which the Ukrainians will have much more of a say than Trump seems to believe”. A useful reminder from @markgaleotti.bsky.social in this weekend’s @thetimes.com (£). www.thetimes.com/article/7eb2...

The @financialtimes.com may need to issue a slight correction. I’m not 100% sure, but I’m fairly confident that isn’t @keirgiles.bsky.social… I jest, but do pick up this weekend’s paper for Giles’ Life & Arts essay, & read his book “Who Will Defend Europe” (@hurstpublishers.bsky.social).

In modern dating and the pursuit of romance with its apps, swiping, ghosting, and the like, success is decidedly less assured. For this Valentine’s Day, I prefer something much more mutually assured. Reading Herman Kahn’s “On Thermonuclear War” (Routledge).

Seems like a geo-strategic geometric demotion from the 'axis of evil': “China, Russia and North Korea have formed a triangle of troublemakers,” according to Admiral Samuel Paparo. Great reporting from Demetri Sevastopulo in the @financialtimes.com. www.ft.com/content/3a31...

America cannot be relied upon to guarantee the security of Europe from Russia because it has to focus on its own borders and the threat of China, President Trump’s defence secretary told Nato leaders

Some thoughts on the possible Putin-Trump meeting. This is unquestionably something Putin would relish. He would want to time it, presumably, to coincide with Victory Day anniversary (early May), leaving time to reach an agreement with the US. Cannot have a summit without it.

Belatedly reading @georgewparker.bsky.social’s superb @financialtimes.com profile of Lord Peter Mandelson, the UK’s new ambassador to the U.S., whose appointment received somewhat less notice amidst the new administration’s ’flooding the zone’.

Channeling Dr. Strangelove on this Monday morning with an ARC of @nktpnd.bsky.social’s “The New Nuclear Age” (@politybooks.bsky.social) one of my Diplomatic Courier spring must reads, & the @nytimes.com crossword. What’s better than starting the week than with the prospect of armageddon?

Starting a bitterly cold morning with the @nytimes.com crossword and Hal Brands’ new book “The Eurasian Century” (@wwnorton.bsky.social), a look at the strategic geography of the titular landmass and what it can tell us about the present and future era of geopolitical conflict.

Patiently waiting for the Sunday snow while reading the always delightful @financialtimes.com Weekend and starting “The House of Huawei” (@portfoliobooks.bsky.social) by the @washingtonpost.com’s Eva Dou. A particularly apt & timely read given the TikTok ban & the ongoing U.S.-China tech tensions.

In “The Retreat from Strategy” (@hurstpublishers.bsky.social) former Chief of the Defence Staff Lord David Richards & historian/strategist Julian Lindley-French warn of Whitehall’s confusion of values w/ interests & the underinvestment in the UK’s military. www.diplomaticourier.com/posts/values...

Literary and book friends, I'm putting together my spring/summer 2025 book look ahead for the @diplocourier.bsky.social. Please send through any recommendations of books to which you're looking forward or indeed on which you're working!

Starting the last Monday of 2024 (we made it…) with the @nytimes.com crossword (amusingly with ‘think tank’ as an answer) and @charleshecker.bsky.social’s newly released “Zero Sum” @hurstpublishers.bsky.social, a riveting exploration of the role of international business in post-Soviet Russia.

Worth every penny at full price, but @markgaleotti.bsky.social’s “Forged in War” (Osprey Books) is beyond a steal at 50% off at @barnesandnoble.com.

Taking a bit of a breather from geopolitical reading (yet still enjoying the @financialtimes.com & @nytimes.com crossword), and instead spending the holidays amongst the country estates, gentlemen’s clubs of London, and shenanigans of P.G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves.

With Elbridge Colby nominated as Under Secretary of Defense for Policy for the incoming admin, it’s worth revisiting his “The Strategy of Denial” (@yalebooks.bsky.social) to see how he looks at strategic competition with China. My Diplomatic Courier review. www.diplomaticourier.com/posts/war-wi...

A wonderful early Christmas treat as @markgaleotti.bsky.social cited my recent @breakingdefense.com piece on Russian strategy in Syria in his most recent “In Moscow’s Shadow” episode, where he listened to Putin’s marathon call-in show so we didn’t have to! open.spotify.com/episode/4rhd...

Really quite cool to see my first @washingtonpost.com quote in Catherine Belton’s excellent reporting on potential U.S.-Russia relations under Presidents Trump and Putin. www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/1...

The fall of Bashar al-Assad in Syria was a setback for Russia, but that the Kremlin allowed it to happen in the first place demonstrates Moscow’s cold strategic calculus and operational adaptability. My latest for @breakingdefense.com. breakingdefense.com/2024/12/cutt...

For @engelsbergideas.bsky.social’s “Best Books of the Year” I selected Jack Watling’s “The Arms of the Future” (@bloomsburybooksuk.bsky.social). An exceedingly sharp & deeply insightful look at how the character of war is transforming in this new tech era. engelsbergideas.com/reviews/book...

What preposterous (and purposefully provocative) twaddle from Will Lloyd in @thetimes.com.

In case you missed it over the weekend, the Diplomatic Courier published my picks for this year’s best books. Some cracking good reads on Russia, China, AI, and even Formula One. Have a read and I’d be keen to know your favourite read of the year! www.diplomaticourier.com/posts/our-bo...

The holiday season in London is always a delight. King’s Cross Station is looking particularly festive this morning.

Well thats one way to put it: breakingdefense.com/2024/12/hous...

I was honoured to join a distinguished panel that included Edward Lucas, James Sproule, & Jennifer Ewing to discuss the recent U.S. election and its geopolitical implications at the @cerge-ei-found.bsky.social “Price of War” conference in London yesterday.

The UK’s parliamentary Defence Committee has launched an inquiry into the UK’s contribution to European security - the first new inquiry launched by the new Defence Committee in this Parliament.

Looking forward to discussing the recent U.S. election and its impact on geopolitics this afternoon at today’s ‘Price of War’ conference hosted by @cerge-ei-found.bsky.social.

I appreciate the need for hyperbole to raise the alarm on defence, but this obfuscates substantive policy issues that affect the UK & other militaries. If the entire British Army is deployed in a large-scale war, it won't do so alone & a whole lot of other things have gone wrong.
