Just had a final workshop with a small jazz 🎹 group working on Groovin’ High, and every one of them nailed the play through at the end. This was quite a challenge for many of them. I’m so flipping proud!

Somehow, after doing a solo transcription every week for years I've never done Stan Getz solo on Girl From Ipanema. I send these out by email every weds. You can grab past ones, and sign up for new ones here: lp.jazz-library.com

I tried something new on the channel this week. A look inside Jon Batiste's performance at the Superbowl from my perspective as a jazz pianist. youtu.be/9dKZWuJydwM

Feeling kind of defeated today. Coming off the high of some great content recently, but spent 2 weeks running face first into a brick wall for the next video. I think I gotta set the Pure Imagination video aside until I can get a few things right.

Ladybird, as played by the great Barry Harris has some really great movements using his 6th on the 5th, 6th diminished and "brothers and sisters" chords. I've just wrapped up this weeks transcription, which goes out to over 5,000 musicians by email tomorrow.

Doing some final polish on this weeks YouTube video about the colorful melody notes in this masterpiece.

My favorite recording of Georgia on my Mind is in the key of Ab... can you guess the artist? I can only think of one recording in that key. Tomorrow at 1:00 Eastern we're starting a series in our Zoom #jazz workshops on this tune. It's free, just register below. jazz-library.com/workshop/

Each week I send a new #jazz transcription to over 5,000 musicians who want to learn more from the greats. This week was the great Wayne Shorter solo on Free For All. You can grab it here, with my observations about the solo. lp.jazz-library.com/profile

"Make content for people, not algorithms" I have this posted 3 places in my studio / office and it's still something I struggle with every day. Algorithms are powerful. I've spend the most time on platforms where the algorithms are designed to align with whats good for the user.

A Night in Tunisia from Charlie Parker and Dizzy at Carnegie Hall, 1947. I put out a new transcription every Wed in my newsletter. Putting on the final touches on this one today. lp.jazz-library.com

Every new jazz chord voicing has 96 permutations to master: 12 keys x 4 tonalities x A/B variations. Even simple concepts become hard to execute with so many options. It’s humbling to realize what’s easy to understand can be so hard to physically master.

This is about 1/5th of the jazz books I own. But how much of them can I play fluently? 🤔

Lately, I’ve been digging into the fundamentals, fixing anything I’m not 100% fluid in—like 6th diminished scales or blues in Ab. It’s so freeing once you really lock those in.

“On The Importance of Jazz” by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a speech given to open the 1964 Berlin Jazz Festival - recited here by Bay Area jazz artists. #jazzsky youtu.be/HTFWl7iRJBE

I had a ton of fun putting this video together about the amazing jazz music in Mr Roger’s Neighborhood. youtu.be/FKDoYhWvjuY

Been working for 2 weeks on this new video on the jazz soundtrack to Mr Roger’s Neighborhood. It’s so close to done. But man am I being a perfectionist with this one.

The phrase “tickling the ivories” creeps me the F out.

So many holiday gigs! Lol. When do my fellow musicians sleep this time of year? Not complaining!

I transcribed a solo from Beegie Adair’s Christmas album. Here are 3 things I learned: 1. Accelerating and decelerating fills 2. Lyrical melodic phrasing 3. Colorful target notes (9ths, 13ths) Tomorrow I’ll send 5,249 jazz musicians the transcription. Subscribe here: lp.jazz-library.com

I learned so much about jazz voicings as a kid playing A Charlie Brown Christmas. This was a fun video to make. youtu.be/i_MySY6selE

This weeks free jazz workshop is on White Christmas. We’re working on applying 5 different comping styles to get us a 2-feel, 4-feel, ballad and even a Bossa Nova. Join us Friday on Zoom at 1pm EST jazz-library.com/live-workshop/

Top 0.001% globally lol Can you guess which jazz song took me the longest to transcribe this year?

Do we have less rampant engagement bait here than on Threads?
