Absolutely obsessed with hazel flowers right now. #wildflowerhour

Ooh my current favourite topic! Honestly, almost all the animal kingdom šŸ˜† Iā€™d add to bats, sharks and vultures with spiders, snakes, wasps, hyaenas, pigeons, gulls, rats, cockroaches and flies (even mozzies!). Want to know more about our relationship with unloved beasts? Watch this spaceā€¦ šŸ‘€

I appreciate everyoneā€™s messages of support, Iā€™m trying to get through all my mentions but as you can imagine, itā€™s been a bit of a busy day :) Remember - peaceful civil disobedience, and no kings, no tyrants. Not ever.

I will never understand how this wasnā€™t the end for either of these deranged brats. Every milquetoast brownnoser who elevated or defended them hoping for a crumb from their unearned power should be ashamed. You knew. The evidence was right there. But you liked standing near the big boys.

Our new paper, based on data from 1,705 studies, shows that pesticides are toxic to organisms they are not intended to harm, including fungi, microbes, plants, insects, & vertebrates such as ourselves. Questions the wisdom of applying over 3 million tonnes of them every year...

The @Telegraph excels itself today with the claim that @NaturalEngland is ā€˜ideologically wedded to concept of conservationā€™. This is our job, & we do it as a matter of legal requirement. Would be odd for a conservation organisation to do anything else. www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2025/02...

For anyone who hasnā€™t yet seen this - Microsoft is quietly increasing subscriptions to fund their AI. If, like me, you donā€™t want to pay 42% extra for unwanted inbuilt AI, you need to do this (and before it auto-renews!) šŸ‘‡

I wrote this a year ago after a pair of woodpigeons got frisky outside my window. And what with it being Valentineā€™s day on Friday, it seemed only right to reshare! (Ps Iā€™ll be back to Substack soon - I had a book to finish and not enough brainpower for both) open.substack.com/pub/jowimpen...

Annual release of millions of non-native gamebirds for shooting? Sure, no problem, no licences/permission required, fill yer boots, do what you like. Carefully managed & licensed reintroduction of a native species? Not if its got sharp claws and teeth. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Stumbled upon this from yonks ago. Owl identification made easy

Hardly new info, but BSky should know: Warsaw's water quality is monitored by eight clams with magnets attached to their shells. If contamination in the water causes the clams to close, the magnets trigger an alarm and shut off the city's water supply. Thank you, little guardian molluscs. šŸ§ŖšŸŒšŸš°

Bafflingly there are still people out there in the world who think being passionate about nature is ā€œkind of weirdā€. or ā€œa niche interestā€. These people have it all wrong. Nature isnā€™t some quirky sideline to the main business. It IS the main business.

Beavers built a dam in two days while authorities wanting to do the same were bogged down in red tape šŸ˜† Saved CZK 30 million (about Ā£1 million) and of course they did it fantastically. Iā€™ll never understand why some people are so intent on waging war on wildlife. english.radio.cz/beavers-buil...

A big moment: the web cam on one of our white storks nests is live again, for the first time this year! Ania (GB5B) and Bartek (GB18) are back on their nest. Enjoy! šŸŖ¶ @whitestorkproject.bsky.social @kneppwildlandfdn.bsky.social Link: whitestorkproject.org/live-cam-feed/

Love this one, such a perfect moment šŸ‘Œ

What better on a day like today than a walk in the woods with lovely people. And spotting my first female hazel flowers of the year - Iā€™m always captivated by these tiny, delicate beauties with their crimson tentacle-like styles šŸ˜

Hello! šŸ‘‹ FINALLY made it here and my feed this morning was almost continuous woodpeckers and this is very good.
