Librarians are the best and I got to spend the morning with a bunch of Waterford’s finest in the stunning Central library.

Yorkshire 'thee' is like French 'tu': intimate but, used too freely, it can sound patronising, even insulting -- hence this famous exchange between a local and a visitor: "Dunt tha 'thee-tha' ME! Tha 'thee-tha's them as 'thee-tha's thee!"

"Honored to pay tribute to Arlester Brown and all the veterans who fought for France’s freedom and peace 80 years ago. Thank you!" 🇫🇷 President Emmanuel Macron.

This is happening, right now. The great "arribada" (arrival) of mother Olive Ridley sea turtles on the Odisha coast, where they dig sand-nests & lay their eggs, driven by ancient instinct. Heart-lifting, magnificent, moving: part of a geography of hope. 🎞️ by Bivash Pandav via my friend Yuvan Aves.

In the US, Trump re-names Denali (its Koyukon name) as Mount McKinley & asset-strips public lands. Meanwhile in Aotearoa/NZ...Mount Egmont is re-given its Maori name of Taranaki Maunga, the mountain becomes a legal person with recognised rights & the Crown apologises. www.rnz.co.nz/news/nationa...

I’m so excited to be introduced by the incredible Danielle McLaughlin for the launch of my novel, The Language of Remembering at Waterstones, Cork! @waterstones.bsky.social Hope to see you all there!

3 yrs ago, my husband, @ianwolter, created a new #Kindertransport memorial on the #Harwich quayside, where most children arrived. Each figure expresses a different emotion; determination, curiosity, anxiety, courage and - looking back - loss. #HolocaustMemorialDay

“There is a real pause in confidence on big films. And that filters down to Bond.” I speak to @thetimes.com about 007's future, Amazon MGM Studios and how all big franchise cinema is waiting nervously on the starting grid right now... www.thetimes.com/culture/film... #JamesBond #Bond26 #TheTimes

Award-winning poet Michael Longley dies aged 85. RIP. He was a great poet and a kind and generous man. I was very grateful for his permission to quote his beautiful poem The Linen Industry in full in Dirty Linen. Thinking of his wife Edna and his three children www.irishtimes.com/culture/book...

This is a magical poem. This genius line - ‘the moon pulls a shadow from the base of my foot that walks behind me’ From Icy Night by Laoighseach Ní Choistealbha Featured Poet in The Stinging Fly Winter 2024 - 25

These have arrived! - the finished, hardback copies of a little book I've written about the joyfully unpredictable experience of producing Father Ted. Publication is Feb 20th but I'd like to give away two copies early - RT by Saturday 6pm and my dog Watson will pick the winners.

“My house is one of many that burned down. This event, for me, has destroyed any boundary between my work as a climate scientist and the rest of my life.” Read more from NASA JPL scientist Ben Hamlington:

“It was the clearest, coldest day I have ever known....Roads were ridged and fanged with ice, opaque and shiny as frozen rivers. Goldfinches sparkled in snow-lit hedges. …Horizons were misty, the sun cold with blue sky above, the north wind light.” January entries, J.A. Baker, The Peregrine (1967)

“Catastrophic fire erases what was there before. So does forgetting. Memory is a resource for facing the future; it’s equipment for imagining, planning, preparing.” @rebeccasolnit.bsky.social pin-sharp and bang-on as always.

Is there a link between #ClimateChange & increasing risk/severity of #wildfire in California--including the still-unfolding disaster? Yes. Is climate change the only factor at play? No, of course not. So what's really going on? [Thread] #CAfire #CAwx #LAfires iopscience.iop.org/a...

Best book I’ve read in decades… I don’t actually know when I’ve read something this exciting & moving & brilliantly comprehensive & utterly mind altering. As for the prose—it’s overwhelmingly beautiful & haunting. Thank you @wwnorton.bsky.social @wwnortonuk.bsky.social @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social 🙏

For Twelfth Night, I made Twelfth Night buns, which were available on the streets of eighteenth-century London for those who could not afford the huge decorated cakes. Could these be a hit in our bakeries today? Please bring back the Twelfth Night bun I say. Who's with me?

A blanket of snow covers the Rock of Cashel. South Tipperary has become a winter wonderland this morning! The Rock of Cashel, or Carraig Phádraig, is undoubtedly one of Ireland’s most iconic monuments with well more than 1500 years of stories. #sneachta

Great to see @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social upcoming book Is a River Alive? on this list. www.thetimes.com/culture/book...

As the owner of mostly pre-loved paperbacks. There is something so glamorous about owning a fabulous, gold-lined scarlet hardback. @lissakevans.bsky.social
