"Turns out students are pretty forgiving when you just say “hey, I was trying something I thought would be cool, but turns out it didn’t work! Everyone gets full credit on this quiz."" This week's post. How I handle non-punitive retrieval practice (quizzes) in a large class using Canvas.

The application window closes Friday for 2025 CUAHSI Virtual University faculty! Interested instructors must submit an application by February 28 to be considered. More information on the CVU program is available on our website. www.cuahsi.org/virtual-univ...

I plan to write about teaching for the next two semesters at this substack. I think it'll be an interesting/useful exercise and it feels cathartic right now. I'll keep posts short. Maybe check it out if reading about teaching sounds fun? Intro post in comment below.

Experimenting with editing lecture recordings to post companion videos for chapters at vt-hydroinformatics.github.io First one is up: www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7J2mJrl33k Is this useful? Should I keep doing it?

Always fun to talk about teaching stuff!

Stop by the CUAHSI AGU exhibit booth (740) to meet the staff and talk water! #CUAHSI #AGU24

John's poster is this morning! Go find him!

Woohoo Logan!

Fun runoff gen and temp stream work at AGU led by students and other colleagues! Stream intermittency in NE-USA (Flanagan et al, Mon) Bedrock depth and stream intermittency (Morgan et al, Mon) Streamflow DEgeneration (Godsey et al, Wed) Runoff gen controls in the southern apps (Finks et al, Thurs)

For no reason in particular, I suggest checking out these two teaching-related presentations at AGU next week! Make your coding classes more accessible (Fri, Gannon et. al) What to we teach in Hydrology classes? (Wed, Kelleher et. al)

Can anyone suggest some good reading on incorporating LLM chatbot use into coding-focused classes? I have some ideas but want to read other ideas! #edusky

Researchers will present at #AGU24 on using passive seismic recordings at Hubbard Brook to understand how depth-to-bedrock affects headwater stream flow. This approach may enhance future predictions of stream network changes in post-glacial settings. #Bluesci #science 💧 🗓️🔗: bit.ly/AGU24_H11T16

Hi all, the starter pack below has been significantly updated now, and I will continue to update it further, whenever time allows. Once this starter pack is full (Bluesky currently allows only up to 150 people per starter pack), I will start another one and call it - Part 2. go.bsky.app/2h9ouZY

This EGU blog post is a succinct summary of a lot of my teaching philosophy… check it out!

Agricultural tile drains, which are widely used across the Midwestern USA, are used to reduce waterlogging. In this new Env Res Letters article, Seth Adelsperger (IU PhD candidate) et al. show that they also increase the duration, frequency, and severity of streamflow drought. #climate #geosky 🧪

🚨 #AGU_H3S will be convening two sessions this year at #AGU24 One session will focus on centering DEI in the classroom and the second will focus on communicating science beyond traditional papers We are accepting abstract submissions through 31 July 2024 at 23:59 EDT #Hydrology #EarlyCareer 🧵1/3

That’s a wrap on year 10 of teaching! Psyched to finish it up seeing this comment on an end-of-class survey. “I am horrible horrible at science, so thank you for making me feel like i could understand it for once!!” That’s what it’s all about!

Biggish update to my hydroinformatics course book! Everything is now in quarto, some issues fixed, and the geospatial stuff should be free of soon-to-be deprecated packages. vt-hydroinformatics.github.io

After some great feedback on my hydro modeling app, I added a new feature... Check out the "Saved Model Runs" tab! Compare up to five parameter sets! Please pass along comments/suggestions... cuahsi.shinyapps.io/HBV-model/

Thanks to @CUAHSI for hosting my latest #hydrology teaching app. Run the HBV model for 700 global watersheds, play with parameters, optimize, and more! Use this in a class and/or are interested in helping me develop activities? Please let me know! cuahsi.shinyapps.io/HBV-model/

There’s a hydrology teaching session at Water Sci Con this summer!! (AGU/CUAHSI hydro meeting) you should submit something so we can learn from each other! agu.confex.com/agu/hydrolog... #hydrology
