These keep getting better and better: how to best show geographic trends without conflating land mass with number of people represented in each geographic unit.

Seeing Federal probationary employees being terminated for 'poor performance'. How can anyone possibly believe that mass firings coming from the top level have anything to do with performance? People are being told that their continued employment is "not in the public interest"!

I really liked this idea of using a histogram as a legend in a choropleth map (since land isn't unemployed; people are), so I made a little guide to doing it with #rstats, {ggplot2}, and {patchwork} www.andrewheiss.com/blog/2025/02...

More waste from the aid freeze: “It’s kind of bonkers. The amount of money it took to get those varieties in the ground is a lot more than just the pennies for labor to keep them going and collect the data.” www.science.org/content/arti...

My heart goes out to all of the probationary federal workers who lost their jobs today in the largest layoff in US history. You all deserved so much better.

Can't resist. 1. last episode watched: season 5 and series finale of Lower Decks.

Currently soliciting and accepting abstracts for the Conference on Applied Statistics in Agriculture and Natural Resources. I always have a blast at this conference - such a fun group.

Really, so seriously fucking tired of ascribing 'genius' to men and so goddamn tired of the out-of-box assumption that I as woman am not competent because....any number of sexist reasons. I am very, very good at my job.

It’s not entirely clear what the purpose of these raids is, but from the outside it appears that DOGE is mainly concerned at this point with amassing huge stores of data, from payment information to private personnel records. @mattbaidc.bsky.social www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/202...

"The progress that [Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Accessibility] programs have made is under threat by governments and institutions worldwide that try to suppress DEIA programs and exclude and erase the people these programs seek to recognize. We condemn these attacks.” - @ropensci.org 🧪

Still dying to know where our free speech anti-cancel culture warriors have gone. The dept of Justice is now proposing to go after companies for endorsing DEI - criminalizing views. These folks are yet again strangely silent.

Academic workers across the country are organizing to call on our congressional representatives on Thursday, 1/30, at 3pm ET / 12pm PT to demand these restrictions be lifted immediately. There will be a training over zoom at the beginning of the event. Join us! form.jotform.com/250226137228...

Renaming axis labels has never been easier. Just add `rename_x_axis_labels()` 🤩 Check out tidyplots.org #rstats #dataviz #phd

The wrecking ball to academia + social services; the unconstitutional executive orders designed to result in a crony-filled Supreme Court nullifying the power of Congress; the rise of AI sold as an automating god to be operated by oligarchs. These things are not unrelated.

Even more relevant than when originally posted 16 hours ago. Call your congressional reps, plz.

I cannot emphasize this enough. It means a LOT to students and staff to give them the best information you have, even if it is incomplete, and to keep the lines of communication open.

There is simply no plausible argument that the president has the constitutional authority to refuse to spend appropriated funds because he doesn’t like how the money is being spent. The legality of policy impoundments is just not a close question.

It is very easy to call your representatives’ offices. They have to log your calls and the call numbers are meaningful. You don’t even have to try to convince anyone; just call and tell them your concerns. They are there to represent you. Let them know what that means. www.usa.gov/elected-offi...
