Legitmately thrilled to share our latest work, in which @fernpizza.bsky.social solved an experimental challenge in plasmid biology as old as the field: measuring how plasmids compete and evolve within individual cells!

Btw this is an actual movie, shot with a Canon DSLR in a photo studio incubator, of fluorescence-expressing plasmids competing and segregating inside cells

I'm delighted to announce that the 2025 @microbiologysociety.org meeting on "Understanding and predicting microbial evolutionary dynamics" will be held in Liverpool 26-27 November 2025! Abstract submission will open soon... #microsky 🧪🧫🦠 microbiologysociety.org/event/societ...

🚨 #PhD opportunity! 🚨 Come and work with @evaheinz7.bsky.social and me at the University of Strathclyde (Glasgow) on an exciting project investigating the roles that #bacteriophages play in the evolution and virulence of #enterococci. 🧫🧬 Details here: www.strath.ac.uk/studywithus/...

Very excited to present our latest work as my first post on Bluesky. Thanks to all co-authors for their valuable contributions! A truly mammoth effort with many different fields of expertise coming together. Looking forward to working with all of you in future as well. #Microsky

🚨Spoiler alert! It's a weird, ancillary copy of metG — normally a central part of protein translation — spread around by a curious phage-plasmid. Another case of plasmids manipulating core bacterial activity in unexpected & impactful ways. Kate's thread has more on this amazing story 🤩 #Microsky

Certain sublineages of antimicrobial resistant bacteria dominate the surveillance landscape, but what causes them to become resistant? Check out our latest work in Shigella to find out and/or read the thread below www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2024.10.27.24316207v2 1/n

That's me done for the year. This year I wrote, drew and coloured about 190 pages of comics, including a graphic novel, one and a half science comics, a pitch and some other bits and bobs. Thanks to everyone who supported my work this year! ✌️

BBSRC funded PhD - evolution in the early stages of symbiosis, using Arsenophonus as model. tinyurl.com/Edgeofsymbio.... Apply by 30/01/2025. Available for UK and International students. With @brockhurstlab.bsky.social and @acdarby.bsky.social. #symbiosky

Considering and reflecting on a world in which mirror and non-mirror life might co-exist (and conflict) — an unexpected coincidence for these risks to be highlighted on the day after I started reading China Miéville's "The City & The City"

JOB OPPORTUNITY! I am hiring a postdoc for 18 months to investigate the links between temperature and antibiotic resistance. Ecoevo microbiology, plasmids, and some super fun stats, modelling, and bioinformatics. To starts in Feb 2025. Please share! #exetercec jobs.exeter.ac.uk/hrpr_webrecr...

Life isn't even-handed: many cellular components are all either left or right handed. But we are now (uncomfortably) close to being able to make flipped "mirror" cells. A group of us consider and highlight the risks and call for collective effort before we get there. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

PhD opportunity in St Andrews on plasmids, antibiotics and defence systems, in collaboration with Helen Alexander in Edinburgh. Funding via BBSRC EastBio, please share & pass on to anyone interested! #microsky🦠🧫🧬 www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

Excited to share a sparkly new paper from our lab! We show how spatial refuges can facilitate evolutionary rescue using experimental evolution with P. fluorescens doi.org/10.1098/rspb...
