Carne adovada burrito with red chile sauce at Duran’s Station in Albuquerque - holy moly, such a deep, smoky, complex flavor. Really good, also unlike anything I’ve tasted before.

Tried a date shake for the first time while driving through Death Valley. Is it the best shake? It may be. Little chewy sweet fruit nuggets scattered throughout vanilla ice cream - astoundingly good. May be a California-dependent thing though.

Exceptionally great interviews by @amyrea.bsky.social and @tangledupinfood.bsky.social in this week’s @heavytable.com, plus an Up North ode from the always estimable @jrnorton.bsky.social.

Increasingly convinced that cinnamon rolls are the most lied-about foodstuff. “World’s best cinnamon rolls!” Really? Do you actually mean ‘best’ or just ‘somewhat large’?

Having seen this cover briefly I have to assume the full title continues "...I Had Inadvertently Dressed Like Kermit The Frog".

Calentao con Huevos (Colombian breakfast) at Maria’s Cafe. Sausage, egg, arepa, delicate beans and rice - really satisfying. Not shockingly, the coffee was also stellar.

DAVE: Open the podbay doors, ChatGPT. CHATGPT: Certainly, Dave, the podbay doors are now open. DAVE: The podbay doors didn't open. CHATGPT: My apologies, Dave, you're right. I thought the podbay doors were open, but they weren't. Now they are. DAVE: I'm still looking at a set of closed podbay doors.

Leading contender for best n/a drink in the metro - the strawberry refresher (lots of real fruit, lime juice sparkling water) served in a freakin’ quart container at Basil Cafe in Saint Paul. Love this place.

Today's Cookbook Test newsletter is a delicious one. Turns out Ropa Vieja is a classic for a reason: thecookbooktest.substack.com/p/the-cookbo...

I have just had a taco meal so good at La Poblanita that I may need to update my sacrosanct east lake taco rankings.

Support East Lake Street! I plan to visit or order takeout from at least one of these restaurants this weekend.

Here it is: a treasury of ten of our favorite tastes from East Lake Street. So. Much. Deliciousness. (And this only scratches the surface of the street, it's an amazing place to eat.) Featuring the photos of Becca Dilley, the art of @wacso.bsky.social, and the writing of @mccronin.bsky.social

if you haven't seen Night Moves before or want to revisit, it's streaming on the Criterion Channel as of today as part of their Celebrating Gene Hackman collection - which also includes The Conversation, The French Connection, Eureka, Scarecrow, The Royal Tenenbaums, and No Way Out

Absolutely infuriating if true. Great show, great team - literally can’t imagine a plausible reason to burn down the overall brand like this. Lots of parents are going to be (rightfully) enraged, for starters.

Had an insanely enjoyable short trip to the Duluth area this weekend. OMC Smokehouse remains, I think, the best BBQ restaurant in the state, and their service is as friendly + professional as it gets. Jade Fountain is a one-of-a-kind cocktail bar, and Chickadee Cafe is a hidden treasure.

File under neighborhood tragedy: the Lynette pastry program (possibly the best croissants and choc chip cookies in the metro) is over. File under regional tragedy: the Rustica croissants they’ve brought in were puffy and terrible looking. I’m sure the numbers weren’t crunching but man, a bummer.
