A summary of what's happening at the United States Geological Survey.

Looking to access important public information on earthquakes? Not so fast, you have to wait while fewer employees than ever frantically try to find maps with geographic names that satisfy the whims of the guys taking away your rights.

🧪⚒️ Vancouver! Did you feel the M4.8 earthquake today? One person described it as "like a plane crashing into the building." The earthquake occurred on a fault in the crust overriding the Cascadia subduction zone. But figuring out where those faults are, and which ones are active, is tricky!

@science.org just published this article about the Paleontological Research Institution and its importance in this time of financial crisis for the institution. Please share widely as donations in any amount can make a real difference in the short-medium term. ⚒️🧪🦑 www.science.org/content/arti...

The DOGE firings have nothing to do with “efficiency” or “cutting waste.” They’re a direct push to weaken federal agencies perceived as liberal. This was evident from the start, and now the data confirms it: targeted agencies overwhelmingly those seen as more left-leaning. 🧵⬇️

Please share: The Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, Democratic Staff, is surveying the impact of the Trump Admin’s mass firings of federal employees from science agencies. If you were terminated since 20 Jan 2025 please fill out this survey: democrats-science.house.gov/sciencefirings

PLEASE SHARE WIDELY. A friend at NSF reports that the firings started. Program officers are being let go with 2 h to vacate their offices, no severance pay, no insurance. With letters declaring that they are fired for 'poor performance.' Some had their status *changed* to 'probationary' then fired

NEW: The National Science Foundation fired nearly 170 workers this morning. They include people who had already cleared their one-year probationary period only to have it changed to two years earlier this month. @kimzetter.bsky.social reports for @wired.com www.wired.com/story/nation...

Please let the GEO/EAR community know: Program Directors and Mission Support who’ve been at NSF under two years were just terminated via Zoom. Even those of us whose offer letter stated one probationary year and whose government data states “permanent”.

Debate is tomorrow! Are you registered yet? us02web.zoom.us/meeting/regi... If you can't make it, the recording will be made available on Youtube afterwards.

🧪⚒️ This morning, people in New Delhi, India felt shaking one person described as "intense and scary." It was a M4.2 earthquake. While not huge, it occurred directly below the city. In fact, an unusual number of earthquakes have been recorded around New Delhi over the last decades. 1/

🧪⚒️ The seismic swarm in Greece continues - and GPS stations on Santorini show that the island itself is deforming, signaling likely movement of magma deep in the crust. In our latest post, we explore a new detailed seismic catalog and come up with a possible interpretation. Read more:

There was an extended period of more-or-less continuous tremor near Santorini last night. Confirmed by the EMSC on Twitter.

The people I know at the USGS who work on Earth hazards are among the most dedicated, selfless, brilliant scientists I know. This breaks my heart.

The purge hit the USGS today. I took the day off, but to the best of my knowledge I survived this round. At least one of my coworkers wasn’t so lucky. A bunch of incredible scientists working on what in many instances is life saving work are now out of a job due to political animus.

Heard that USGS Mendenhall postdocs who were in the probationary period are part of the round of layoffs. Anyone know if true?

For the 79% of heterosexual married women whose legal married name doesn’t match your birth certificate or passport, get ready to have your voting rights frozen. Yes, read that again. No, that is not hyperbole. Act now.

🧪⚒️ Do GPS data reveal slow slip before large earthquakes? In 2023, a paper in Science claimed yes. Our re-analysis showed that the data were contaminated by large-scale noise, and removing the noise removed the signal. We have been invited to debate this question with the authors. Register now!

On International Day of Women & Girls in Science, it's apparently more important for NASA to erase women from their website than to progress US space exploration. We had so far to go & now the US is going backwards by the second. Do everything you can to keep forward momentum elsewhere in the world.

🧪⚒️ A very large earthquake - M7.6 - just struck the Caribbean, about 200 km southwest of the Cayman Islands. The earthquake was widely felt in Honduras, Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula, Jamaica, and Cuba. Tsunami warnings have been issued (see tsunami.gov). 1/

Ellen Weintraub, chair of the Federal Election Commission, announced that President Trump sent her a letter declaring her immediate removal. However, Weintraub rejected the action, stating it was not legally valid.

See below for a beautiful 3D model of the seismic swarm in Greece, clearly illuminating multiple structures at different depths in the crust.
