Last fall, @raeoflion.bsky.social and I wrote about how a Florida sheriff's office botched the investigation of a rape report by a 12-year-old named Taylor Cadle. Now, it seems, the sheriff's office is filtering Taylor's name from social media comments www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

This is an infuriating follow-up to @julialurie.bsky.social and @raeoflion.bsky.social's great story about Taylor Cadle, who, as a 12-year-old, was raped by her adoptive father, accused of lying, forced to apologize—and then filmed her abuser in the act when he did it again bit.ly/41dks6B

Deeply moved by my colleagues at @cir-union.bsky.social who organized a fundraiser following my termination at @motherjones.com. As I navigate an unexpected period of transition, your support – no matter what the size – would mean the world to me. Every penny helps. www.gofundme.com/f/community-...

"Taylor is one of hundreds of victims alleging sexual assault who have been charged with false reporting nationwide." @julialurie.bsky.social @raeoflion.bsky.social @motherjones.com #longreads

I'm wildly grateful to work at an org that invests in the deep digging that is investigative reporting—the countless interviews, FOIA requests, reporting trips, late nights combing through documents, calls with fact checkers and editors and lawyers to make sure that the reporting is rock solid

Thanks so much for having me, @kuer.org

New, from @bloomberg.com The Egg: A story of extraction, exploitation and opportunity This investigation of the human egg trade (and egg theft) takes you from India➡️Argentina➡️Greece➡️Taiwan➡️US.... Superb work from a team of extraordinary reporters. Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/graphics/202...

Stop everything you're doing and read this @julialurie.bsky.social story on adoptions right now. And next time you hear someone talk about "making adoptions easier," remember this is what that can look like. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Really glad to see reporters like @julialurie.bsky.social (and Gabrielle Glaser at The Cut earlier this year!) exposing the predatory practices of adoption agencies who exploit pregnant women for profit

New must-read from @julialurie.bsky.social for @motherjones.com: Inside the cottage industry of Utah adoption agencies that fly in poor women to place their children for adoption bit.ly/4gobMPr

This story, on Utah's booming and exploitative adoption system, is a heavy but important read. As always, @julialurie.bsky.social delivers the goods. bit.ly/4gobMPr

Daniel was thrilled about the upcoming birth of his son. He had no idea a cottage industry of adoption agencies pays cash to women who place their kids for adoption—and that his wife was one of those women. Inside Utah’s thriving, devastating adoption industry: www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

Don't miss the latest from @julialurie.bsky.social, who takes a hard look at the devastating cost of Utah’s thriving adoption industry

1/ Since our story with PBS NewsHour came out last month, comments flooded into Polk County Sheriff’s social feed demanding consequences for Det. Melissa Turnage, who sought criminal charges against Taylor Cadle for lying. We recently learned she was disciplined after we started asking questions.

It’s anecdotal, but as an adoptee who spent years in a (different state’s) foster care system, this statement absolutely rings true. This story is upsetting for many reasons, but I think insufficient attention is paid to the role child protective agencies play in actually undermining child safety.

If you read one #longread this weekend, make it this stunning piece by @raeoflion.bsky.social and @julialurie.bsky.social: www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus... cc @longreads.com @dvnjr.bsky.social @jacobfeldman.bsky.social

ICYMI: When 12-year-old Taylor Cadle said she was sexually abused, a detective threatened her with going back to foster care and accused her of lying. To vindicate herself, Taylor decided to gather her own evidence. www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...

“This is one of the most outrageous stories I’ve ever worked on.” @julialurie.bsky.social www.motherjones.com/criminal-jus...
