The Texas-New Mexico #measles outbreak has claimed a second life. Unvaccinated adult. Measles is not a benign ailment. The only way to prevent it is vaccination. www.nmhealth.org/news/alert/2...

WHERE WILL YOU BE TOMORROW?

In occupied France, people would drop their used matches folded into a V, as a secret sign of resistance. People who opposed the Nazis would see them, knew they weren't alone, & felt emboldened to take action. Some modern day equivalents here--small but powerful actions you can absolutely do:

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) makes recommendations that determine access to vaccines in the US. The ACIP meeting scheduled for next week is now delayed. This is how RFK Jr will administratively destroy vaccination programs. www.nbcnews.com/health/healt...

HHS has ordered CDC to stop its influenza vaccine “Wild to Mild” media campaign. This is an award-winning campaign that effectively explains how influenza vaccine may not prevent infection but does decrease illness severity. We are currently having one of the worst influenza seasons in 15 years.

This is not news to most scientists by now, but others might be interested. Biomedical research is undergoing tremendous damage, even beyond the firings at NIH, CDC, and NSF; the suppression of data sharing; and the attacks on initiatives to improve scientific quality.

🚨 Excited to see our work published in @jmirpub.bsky.social🚨 Our study characterizes the geographical connectivity across spatiotemporal scales, highlighting the significant heterogeneities that influence disease dynamics. W/ L Alvarez-Zuzek @vcolizza.bsky.social @bansallab.bsky.social

There’s a lot going on right now & it can be hard to get work done! We’re offering a virtual space for @midas-network.bsky.social trainees to make some writing progress on Monday, Feb 10, at 2pm ET. 1. Today the NIH director issued a new directive slashing overhead rates to 15%. I want to provide some context on what that means and why it matters. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...

I’ve unfortunately needed to add more material to my post from yesterday. The re-election of Donald Trump is looking like the biggest act of American self-destruction since the Civil War. Same link, new title and some updates.

Huge thanks to my sister for helping put these together.

If you feel like everyone is sick right now, you are right. Flu is doing something unusual - outpatient visits just hit 7.0%, surpassing January's peak. substack.com/home/post/p-...

It's all gone. They've taken down all the CDC datasets from data.cdc.gov Data that's critical for public health & research. Data paid for by citizens. That the government now censors. "Do not fear those who tell the truth. Fear those who try to hide it. They are willing to sacrifice other things."

This is a big deal, y'all. Federal health websites are being stripped of content or removed in their entirety. Stick with this thread for a look at what's disappeared so far! 1/x

Really appreciate Jonathan Lambert pointing out that NSF grants are congressionally mandated to weigh how grants broaden participation in science, putting the administration's executive order against DEIA in conflict with, and potentially undermining, congressional legislation

National Science Foundation suspends salary payments, leaving researchers unable to pay their bills www.statnews.com/2025/01/30/t... Story by @ericboodman.bsky.social

American science and medicine has been thrown into chaos and uncertainty over the past week. Here are some stories to get up to speed. 1/12

Ecologists (or similar)!!! Apply for the @asn-amnat.bsky.social Student Research Awards by March 14!! Ten awards of $2K each will be given to research that advances the the conceptual unification of ecology, evolution, or behavior. More here: bit.ly/asn_grant_25

For more in-depth analysis on what's happening at the NIH:

All NIH study sections canceled indefinitely. This will halt science and devastate research budgets in universities.

New: Trump officials have paused all external communications at health agencies like CDC, FDA, NIH. No health alerts and the famed MMWRs; no updates to key websites or social media posts. And no indication how long the pause will last. With @rachelroubein.bsky.social + Lena Sun.

Thrilled this work is out! Truly a team product and a labor of love from all involved. www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes...

NSF makes you say who you got conflicts (coauthored) with. We (really just Jordan Matelsky) just built you a tool for that. Literally one click: bib.experiments.kordinglab.com/nsf-coa

Want to work on computational approaches to infectious diseases epi, ranging from healthcare-associated infections to emerging infectious diseases? Want to do it with a splash of global & rural health? #episky I'm recruiting students! Apply here; vetmed.wsu.edu/education/gr... or contact me.

I'm also looking for between one and two postdocs to work on modeling small, structured populations like hospitals, jails, workplaces, etc. #episky If you're interested in those opportunities, please reach out!
