Perhaps we always overestimated what we have in common with the USA? The murder rate is 5 times higher than in the UK. Gun ownership is 35 times higher. Weekly church attendance is 6 times higher. The US has executed 100 people since 2020: we haven't executed anyone for 60 years.

The reaction to Vance's speech in Munich and Trump's attack on Ukraine reminds me of Orwell noting, after Hitler's takeover of Czechoslovakia in Spring 1939, that ordinary people were quietly accepting that we'd have to fight Germany soon.

Trump has changed the world. The Atlantic alliance that has been the most powerful force for good the world has ever known is dead. America no longer cares about democracy or law in the world, only money and power. Americas new ally is the russian ultra nationalist mafia. Europe is completely alone.
