I’m not sure if you can overdose on schadenfreude but we’re about to find out

America cannot long remain free, nor first among nations, if it becomes the kind of place where universities are dismantled because they don't align politically with the current head of the government.

Happening tomorrow!

🚨ISRB Webinar Alert - Zone 3: The Americas 🚨 Join us on May 16th at 12pm US East Coast Time. Featuring Dr. Sarah McMenamin from @bostoncollege.bsky.social and Dr. Erica Crespi from @wsupress.bsky.social. Find all details at isrbio.org/event-6181293

The current administration’s narrative that Harvard (and all universities) feel “entitled” to federal dollars misleads the public. Nor are these funds a “privilege” 1/n

We are so proud of @azucena-virgen.bsky.social - Juliano lab undergraduate researcher and MARC scholar who recently won a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship! An excellent example of the talented young scientists we are fighting for. biology.ucdavis.edu/news/cbs-stu...

My representative sticking up for Science, thank you ❤️

ACTION ITEM-----ACTION ITEM Implementation of Schedule F This is what a lot of us have been worried about. This allows for many civil service positions to replaced with political appointees. This could include NIH institute directors and even POs. BUT THERE IS A COMMENT PERIOD... 1/n

Many thanks to Ruoheng Li from @biologists.bsky.social for highlighting our work!

A colleague at Stanford’s business school used The Stanford Daily to argue—poorly—against DEI. The piece was riddled with historical errors and left one searching for fact, so I broke my public writing hiatus to respond. I hope you’ll read and share the piece. stanforddaily.com/2025/04/22/w...

This is incredibly cool: if you search for a condition that’s affected your family, the site returns stats on how much NIH has done for that disease, *and* a contact form for reaching out to tell your Members of Congress why you want to see them defend NIH. Pass it on!

Actually, flip the headline. It's really "How the Federal Government Became so Dependent on Universities." These competitively awarded, peer reviewed research grants produce tremendous returns on investment. New tech, health, science that benefit all people & businesses in the USA & world.

UC Davis has done something similar - redoing their homepage to highlight all the good that comes out of our research is front and center: www.ucdavis.edu

🚨ISRB Webinar Alert - Zone 3 🚨 Join us on April 18th at 12pm US East Coast Time. Featuring Dr. Linda Barlow @bizzarlow.bsky.social from University of Colorado SOM and Dr. Tatjana Piotrowski from @stowersinstitute.bsky.social on #SensoryRegeneration. Find all details at isrbio.org/event-6155867

"I really think we all need to be speaking up right now. . . . I think this would be so much stronger if many more of my fellow presidents were speaking up." - Chris Eisgruber www.nytimes.com/2025/04/09/p...?

Instead of believing the myth that three expensive, genetically modified wolves are “de-extinct” dire wolves, let’s look at animals humanity has actually brought back from the brink of extinction using proven science and dedicated hard work: 🧵/6

My group is hiring a new Postdoc to work on gene regulation and chromatin in Nematostella. Please RT! For more information see here: gahanlab.com tinyurl.com/34xke35d

“From April 14-18, select UBC graduate programs at UBC Vancouver will re-open their applications for US citizens to be considered for Sept 2025 or Jan 2026 entry - they are ready to provide quick admissions decisions for these applicants“ #gradstudent #gradschool www.grad.ubc.ca/us-applicant...

An important point getting overlooked: When NIH cancels "diversity" grants (e.g., diversity supplements, Fs, Ks, etc), they aren't canceling the grants based on *what* the grant studies. They're cancelling them based on *who* is doing the research. And that disallowed "who" is anyone not white.

It was lovely celebrating my amazing colleagues across the campus last evening. Groundbreaking work and teaching excellence is happening all around us every day @ucdavis.bsky.social ❤️🎉. Frankly, a good reminder of what we are fighting for.

Just want to say again I’m grateful for the people doing their best to hold it down at the NIH despite the chaos and uncertainty. I see you 🙌🏾

Make this go viral! Her husband’s life was put at risk by the Signal texts.

CURES NOT CUTS ✨ Did you know? The cost of just four fighter jets funds life-saving medical research for 300,000 scientists across 2,500+ institutions. Let’s invest in cures, not but funds to the #NIH. Share if you agree! #CuresNotCUTS #FundScience #InvestInHealth #NIH #standupforscience

I miss when the biggest controversy about mRNA was whether it correlated with protein or not.

You cannot negotiate with terrorists. If the Ivies give in to any regime demands, the goal posts will move. If the massive ivy endowments aren’t deployed to preserve institutional integrity and academic freedom, what on earth are they for?

Amid chaos, some joy. Proud to share this study from @regen-bio-cie.bsky.social (Sergio Campos) surveying regeneration in diverse Hydra species, showing that Hydra oligactis lost foot regeneration ability, which can be rescued by a Wnt signaling pulse during injury. www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

These are the senators who collaborated with the GOP. Schumer Fetterman Cortez Masto Durbin King Shaheen Gillibrand Schatz Hassan Peters Don’t let them forget it. No peace for them.

Here’s a cheat sheet with all the phone numbers for the US Senate. I have a feeling we’ll be calling them a lot in the near future.

done!

Dear all, Because of your help shining light on this all 15 were reinstated today. This is a huge win for science - When We Fight We Win!!!

On Valentine’s day, 15 Assistant Professors at NIH who had started their research labs in the last 2 years were fired. Their scientific expertise was built over 10-12 years of training, most if not all of which was supported by NIH. The start up funds for their laboratories were paid by NIH

Thank you to @kcranews.bsky.social for covering the Stand Up for Science rally in Sacramento yesterday! One of our fearless organizers, @doctheagrif.bsky.social is featured in the article and video. www.kcra.com/article/stan...

With 4 hours to go until we @standupforscience.bsky.social in Sacramento, I feel buoyed by the images of europeans standing with us today, THANK YOU FRIENDS! ❤️❤️❤️

Congratulations to MCB Professor Kassandra Ori-Mckenney as a new UC Davis Chancellors Fellow! www.ucdavis.edu/news/meet-20...

How it started. How it's going. See you March 7th.

I made a video with @ucdavis.bsky.social on the benefits of federal grants for health science and our economy. Please share with friends/family that could be receptive or better yet, make your own video www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndjH...

Somebody just made me aware of the tweet by that person. Students who see this: taking time off work to advocate for science peacefully at the state capitol is NOT participating in an illegal protest. Full stop.

This is very cool! AND I just can't believe @ucsusa.bsky.social got THAT MANY SCIENTISTS to agree on something!!! That's how you know it's serious, y'all. #standupforscience2025 @standupforscience.bsky.social www.ucsusa.org/about/news/s...
