Nothing in game design is fundamental. It's an art, not a framework. It's utilizing every aspect of the experience to amplify the emotions you want to cultivate in your audience. There's no 'one size fits all' in game design, just concepts more widely applicable than others. #gamedesign

I made a Doom source port that runs within a PDF file. PDFs support Javascript, so Emscripten is used to compile Doom to asm.js, which is then run within the PDF engine. Input/output is done by manipulating text input fields. doompdf.pages.dev/doom.pdf github.com/ading2210/do...

Genuinely surprised by all this hate towards achievements. Maybe it's because I like coming up with those. I enjoy the process of figuring out what'd be challenging and fun for the player to do, as well as replaying games I enjoy to pop some. Not a fan of collectibles though.

So Unity recently decided that the tiny startup I dayjob for needed to upgrade to Industry at 5k/year/seat. We had no chance to contest it because they would have killed our only product. They even threatened people we worked with in the past with the same. It's not just us. DO NOT USE UNITY!

Always and forever.

Earlier this year I looked into creation of interactive tools inside #unrealengine and wrote up a post about it, but never published it anywhere as I keep putting off rebuilding my website. So now I posted it to @joewintergreen.bsky.social 's forum instead impromptu.zone/t/building-a...

Tonight's update: added the palette changing effect, as well as animations for different enemies. In the finished game, the color change will also affect the music, as well as player and monsters behavior. Colors are not final, of course. I'll get those figured out before release.

I just want to show how I go about making the backgrounds for Sofia the Witch. I block them out first to make sure it's fun to just move around in. If it is then I add all the details. Try the demo here jakemacher.itch.io/sofia-the-wi... #screenshotsaturday

Update: it's working in-engine. Not my best work, but it's what I could come up with under the time constraints. I'll try to get it looking a little better if I have the time.

New BlueSky friends! 👻🎮 #SoloDev here w/ my 1st Steam release, Spotless🧹 It's a spooky GameBoy style roguelite about cleaning haunted sites where DustBunnies come alive! Say hi, lmk what you're working on, and wishlist Spotless! All support is appreciated 😄 store.steampowered.com/app/2638610/...

Alright, time to post some actual game development here. I'm using my good old Nintendo 3DS to draw sprites for my next game. I'll also be using it to make sound effects and music, hopefully. Being able to work on my game while in bed is very neat.

There is no "Unreal Engine" starter pack to follow. So im creating one here: go.bsky.app/S3U5wKj If you have any Unreal Engine skills, reply if you want to be added. Repost if you can so other people can be aware too. #UE5 #UnrealEngine5 #UnrealEngine #Gamedev #Indiedev
