NEW: Mahmoud Khalil's attorneys ask Judge Farbiarz to rule on their client's fully-briefed motion for release on bail pending adjudication of his habeas petition (which they note could be a lengthy process), or on their motion to compel his return to detention in New Jersey.

BREAKING: The American Bar Association has sued the Trump administration on behalf of its members to put an end to Donald Trump's law firm intimidation project, calling Trump's efforts "unprecedented and uniquely dangerous to the rule of law." storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Many thanks for live-posting this hearing @johnhawkinson.bsky.social. 🧵⬇️ If you're interested, I do a deep dive, extensive case study of Kleindienst v. Mandel (1972) ["Mandel"] in Chap. 6 of "Threat of Dissent." And, I discuss Trump v. Hawaii (2018) in Chap. 8. 🗃️ www.amazon.com/gp/product/0...

Ross told me he enlisted in the Marines when he was 17 because he loves his country and to help his parents get a path to citizenship. protesting directly in front of Marines deployed by President Trump he told me "it makes me feel sad... a lot of Marines, they’re all Hispanic."

Thread.

Something just hit me. Trump’s tactics might have just awakened a sleeping giant. All day, I’ve been seeing clips of children of immigrants newly activated: speaking up and pushing back harder than their parents ever could. Future voters.

Aesop Birkemeier, who portrayed White, said that the consensus among most kids at home is that history is boring. “Which is kind of sad,” he said. “You have to learn about the past to build the future. Plus, history is actually cool.” 🗃️ www.nytimes.com/2025/06/14/a...

Remarkable. MSNC: "I want to reiterate this has been 100% peaceful." Seconds later, LA County sheriffs start firing on the crowd. Yet again, "law enforcement" deliberately escalated.

UPDATE: Judge Farbiarz denied Mahmoud Khalil's request for release. The judge says the court did not enjoin the second charge, but "a number of avenues are now available" to Khalil, "including a bail application to the immigration judge presiding over the immigration case."

NEW: The government claims that Judge Farbiarz did not order them to release Mahmoud Khalil, instead saying the court only prevented them from detaining Khalil on the Rubio Determination, not the other grounds of omitting information on immigration docs.

UPDATE: Judge Farbiarz ordered the government to respond to Khalil's letter requesting the court order his release by 1:30pm CT. The letter referenced an email Khalil's team sent to the New Orleans ICE field office asking what time Khalil would be available for pickup.

NEW: Mahmoud Khalil submits a letter to Judge Farbiarz asking the court to order his release. The letter says he has posted bond, and the government has not filed a notice of appeal for the court's preliminary injunction (which went into effect at 9:30am this morning).

JUST IN: The Ninth Circuit GRANTS the Trump admin's request to temporarily stay Judge Breyer's order to relinquish federal control of the California National Guard. It orders briefing over the next few days and a hearing on Tuesday. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Among many notable points: Judge Breyer concludes that to declare this a “rebellion,” as the administration would have it, would raise serious First Amendment concerns.

JUST IN: Judge Charles Breyer finds that President Trump exceeded the scope of his authority and violated the 10th Amendment by federalizing the California National Guard and orders him to return control to Governor Newsom. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

Schumer stopped the Senate to announce that this happened, in the middle of debate on a bill where Democrats were collaborating with Republicans on crypto legislation. How you can compartmentalize these two things is beyond me.
