Has the CAQ officially entered its Trump era ? “Not only is the CAQ choosing to ignore a recent court ruling that concludes there was an ‘absence of data’ to support its tuition fee hikes for out-of-province students, it’s also attacking media for reporting on it.” cultmtl.com/2025/06/the-...

A late start to the field season, but an important one - 10 years of biogeochemistry monitoring in this lovely peatland (Grande plée Bleue, near Quebec City)

This new map provides a global view of the distribution of a multitude of aquatic ecosystems, including various wetlands. It's a pretty big step forward, and I look forward to seeing how it will be used e.g. to study wetland greenhouse gases. essd.copernicus.org/articles/17/...

I live in what is likely the most bike-friendly city in N America (Montreal). There is a clear modal shift towards cycling, and public transit has decent coverage. Yet so many people make a conscious decision to drive short distances daily, I don't get it

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe gets closer to understanding climate change www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

Today is #worldpeatlandsday! May the sun continue to rise on beautiful peatlands such as this one, in northeastern Quebec. 💚💧🌿

An important, often overlooked impact of wildfires - the remobilization of legacy pollutants such as arsenic, lead and mercury 🔥

Stop what you’re doing and watch this immediately. Canadian doctors returned from Gaza and are sharing what they witnessed and lived. They are demanding action from Mark Carney. Their testimony is our failure.

"This is particularly important in academia: we attribute burnout to other factors: “maybe I’m just tired this week”, or “it will get better once I get all these 457 things out of the way and I can clear my deck”. Well, I got news for you: *the deck is never cleared*."

It pains me to say this, but if you are not a US citizen, you should not attend scientific conferences in the US, visit US institutions, or otherwise travel to our country. Right now it's not worth the risk. Hopefully that will change. If it doesn't, science in the US is sunk anyway.

Would it have killed them to mention the fact that this was due to climate change? @powcanada.bsky.social

“We’re facing the extinction of everything we know and love. And the only radical thing a person could be doing right now is ignoring it.”

Today my wondeful PhD student @sophiepouille.bsky.social successfully defended her thesis on dust impacts on boreal/alpine ecosystems in the Yukon. Sophie is a gem, she wrote an excellent thesis, defended it with flying colours, and is just an overall great human being! I was lucky to work with her.

It’s me, hi, I’m the PI, it’s me 😭

As a Canadian I have to say it’s kinda surreal to log onto Bluesky and regularly be greeted by a wall of horrifying new updates from American users about their country’s descent into fascism

Wonderful cover, and amazing research by Zhang et al. - they used classic Chinese poetry that mentions the Yangtze finless porpoise (724 poems in total!) to estimate the range contraction of the species over the last 1400 years. Such a creative approach to generate truly novel data!

Perhaps an unpopular opinion considering how prevalent the term has become but the peddling of "natural climate solutions" does not help shedding light on the only real climate solution: lowering fossil fuel emissions

This. And when some of us politely raise concerns about our institutions giving in to the fake promises of AI, we are dismissed as heretics

Something sinister is going on in Blainville. The Quebec government is allowing an American company to run rough shot over provincial law so they can dump American toxic waste on our wetlands. Business as usual for the CAQ therover.ca/toxic-secret...

I smell AI

In addition to the fact that there are far from enough jobs to absorb an influx of US scientists abroad, people seem to forget that many of these jobs require proficiency in a language other than English. These "US scientists will just go elsewhere" discourses are just another form of imperialism

Over the past weeks I've had 2 major grants terminated, from EPA and NSF. Over $1 million of funding for human-enviro geography research lost. These terminations have negative impacts for myself, my graduate students, my university, community partners, and society. #withoutNSF #geosky 1/9 🧪

Sure whatever. 25% tariff on eating ice cream on a hot day next. 50% tariff on petting a dog. 35% tariff on the sound of children laughing. 10% tariff on the smell of flowers. 15% tariff on the cold side of the pillow. And another 25% on China, why not.

How did Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum became the most popular president in the world? Read this. www.netzeropolicylab.com/mexico-green... “We will not return to the neoliberal model … We will continue with Mexican Humanism and with the maxim of ‘For the good of all, first the poor.’”

Good news for today! The @agu.org and @amspolicy.bsky.social are teaming up to support climate science in the US and fill the vacuum left by the cancellation of the support team and dismissal of the authors of the Sixth National Climate Assessment. More from @drshepherd2013.bsky.social here:

"Climate realism" is an elite smokescreen for fossil fuel sponsored necropolitics. @eciu.net: "73% UK voters in the most rural seats are concerned about climate change (cf. 70% nationally). 68% of rural voters support the UK’s net zero target; 12% opposed" #ClimateAction eciu.net/media/press-...

And I will replace Duolingo with something else

As a Canadian, seeing these Americans giggle at the idea of taking our sovereignty is fucking harrowing and offensive.

One result I'm not seeing get a lot of attention: Aaron Gunn won. The guy who front-the most extreme parts of Poilievre's social and public safety agenda (he directed the "doc" Vancouver is Dying) will be heading to Ottawa.
