JUSTICE submitted evidence to @davidgauke.bsky.social’s crucial Independent Sentencing Review. As prison overcrowding strains the justice system, it’s vital we ensure the set of rules that determine people’s punishment for crimes are fair, effective, and help prevent reoffending. (1/3)

Our report launch for 'AI in our Justice System' is about to kick off. Looking forward to a fascinating discussion with #AI policy expert @sophiaadamsbhatti.bsky.social, Master of the Rolls Sir Geoffrey Vos, James Harper (@lexisnexisuk.bsky.social) & Dan Squires KC! justice.org.uk/ai-in-our-ju...

💡 New report proposes 1st rights-based framework to guide AI use in the justice system, to help harness AI’s power safely. AI isn’t a cure-all & its use carries big risks – to individuals & to democracy if people lose trust in the law through more scandals like Horizon (1/4)

Criminal courts are in crisis. The decision to launch a review is a step in the right direction; we look to the review to bring reforms to sustainably resource our courts while recognising the importance of juries to securing justice and public confidence in our legal system.

This report on the huge prison building shortfall shows that, to properly solve this crisis, the government must focus on fixing vital basics such as the probation service, mental health care, & youth centres to give people real routes away from offending. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

We all want safe, thriving communities, but these orders have existed for decades & they still don’t work. We must listen to local authorities & victims by fixing problems with existing tools & properly funding public services & youth programmes to tackle anti-social behaviour's root causes (1/2)

Our whole lives are built on our citizenship rights. When someone is deprived of their citizenship without being heard from, their right to a meaningful appeal becomes a vital safeguard. Read why JUSTICE is intervening in the U3 Supreme Court case: justice.org.uk/justice-inte...

In our Corruption and the Rule of Law breakout session, Dr Susan Hawley (@spotlightcorruption.org) discusses the conundrum of how to campaign to improve corruption without providing fuel for populism #JAC24

Patrick Green KC ends the session by noting that, “in countries without the rule of law, people would give their lives for it. In countries with the rule of law, people don’t need to know what it means.” #JAC24 #PostOfficeScandal

Patrick and Jo describe how, if the case had run out of money and needed to halt, the subpostmasters could have been sued for legal costs. This imbalance in terms of access to justice risked the Post Office trying to run up the costs of the case #JAC24 #PostOfficeScandal

Now to a discussion of the Post Office scandal with Patrick Green KC, lead counsel in Alan Bates v Post Office, and Jo Hamilton, brilliant campaigner and former Subpostmaster #JAC24

Lady Simler says a lack of access to justice is not only a legal problem but a societal problem, because of the knock-on consequences for health, employment, and housing #JAC24

Welcome to delegates at our annual conference today, online & in person! Brilliant to open the day with @fionarutherford.bsky.social introducing the Attorney General's remarks, followed by a keynote address by Lady Simler #JAC24
