There have been 9 deaths in LASD custody in the first 9 weeks of 2025. LA County has still not set forth the MCJ closure plan from March 30th, 2021. This report outlined how to close the jail in 18-24 months. Join us on April 1st at the board to demand #NoMoreDelay, #CloseMCJ!

The Hughes flames are now a mile away from 5,000 people trapped in concrete cages. We have been warning them all day to evacuate then, before it was too late to do so safely. Statement below:

In 1997, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department "made up" evidence against 2 teens to pin a murder on them. When the real killer - who later confessed - killed again LAPD pinned THAT murder on yet someone else. By @keribla.bsky.social

Someone dies in Los Angeles Sheriff Department custody every 8 days. Close the LA County Men's Central Jail and invest in community care. www.dailynews.com/2024/10/16/a...

Three deaths in the first three weeks of 2024. Meanwhile members of the board have detailed re-election timelines, but not a timeline for the Care-First vision the community fought for. 📌Join us on Tuesday 1/30 @ 8:30am for a community protest at the board.✊🏾 details below👇🏾

When state inspectors visited Men's Central Jail in LA this fall, they found mold, broken toilets & rodent droppings. It appeared that guards weren’t doing their required hourly checks & there were no records of monthly fire inspections. www.latimes.com/california/s...

Almost one death every week. As this fatal year comes to a close, the LA County Board of Supervisors has still not even put this issue on their meeting agenda. 📌SAVE THE DATE: Community Protest - Tuesday, December 5th at the LA County Board of Supervisors Meeting

The Vera Institute released a tool to track LA Co's unfulfilled promise to decrease the jail population. Highlights: over 40% of inmates have mental health needs and over 50% are pretrial and thus are constitutionally still innocent. 40 people in jail have died so far. Join @justicela.bsky.social!

It’s way past time to close LA County’s Mens Central Jail. #closeMCJ @justicela.bsky.social www.latimes.com/california/s...

💥 THIS THURSDAY💥 Looking to get the gist of what we do and why we’re doing it? This is for you! Join us virtually on October 12th as a community and uncover why closing MCJ is a fight worth fighting. 📌REGISTER: jlanow.org/mcjoct23

This week @keribla.bsky.social reported the 29th in-custody death in LA County jails this year. The last three have all come within a week of each other, and all from inside Men’s Central Jail. This is an emergency.

This death was both predictable and preventable by LA County BOS. Earlier this year, the Sybil Brand commission labeled 171 at Twin Towers “one of the worst kept” and “a serious health and safety risk for all”. What more will it take for the Board of Supervisors to actually fund Care?

LASD Gangs are deeply entrenched in our communities, and the Board of Supervisors just gave them billions to fight accountability even harder.

Over the last ten years, LASD staff have collectively made $2.4 billion in overtime. In 2022, LASD staff made $347 million in overtime. This is 56% higher ($125 million more) than the prior year. 🤯

Show up for Ricci and Ms. Italy!!! ‼️This Friday 7/7 🗓️

We’re here at the LA County BOS budget meeting because while they steal community talking points, they don’t put the money where their mouths are. We demand a CARE FIRST Budget. Tap in virtually now: jlanow.org/626

As we enter the LA County BOS meeting, we have learned that yet another in-custody death has happened today. The 28 year old man had not been sentenced for a crime.

🚨Two days ago a 32 year old man died in Men's Central Jail marking the 18th LASD in-custody death of 2023.🚨 Join us at 9AM on Tuesday, June 6th at the LA County Board of Supervisors meeting wearing orange🍊to show solidarity with the families who have lost loved ones inside.

Another death in the decrepit MCJ facility in Hilda Solis’s district. Another person killed by the inaction of LA County BOS. It is a deadly decision to keep MCJ open after committing to closure.

LA County jails reported their 17th death this year over the weekend. There have only been 20 weeks in 2023. Our Board of Supervisors has yet to adopt one of the several evidence-based plans provided to them to fix this crisis. #NoMoreDelay #CloseMCJ

SCOOP: 35 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies received a letter from the Inspector General directing them to submit photos of their legs and answer questions about membership in deputy gangs. Tattooed deputy gangs have plagued the LASD for 50+ years. Now, the county is building a criminal case.
