KEXP going real hard right now

sisyphus at daily standup: i had to roll back some changes

RIP to Sly Stone. Calling someone a genius has mostly lost meaning, except when you apply it to Sly. I'm glad Questlove gave him a revealing and rewarding documentary with SLY LIVES (AKA THE BURDEN OF BLACK GENIUS). I wrote about it for @ebertvoices.bsky.social.

My daughter told my wife she was going to cut up some strawberries for her. Meet The Strawbster:

Oh that’s right. Thanks United for reminding me why I don’t fly United.

Damn.

Flying in to DCA today.

Every time I see a thread on here about the "possibilities of derivative functions on an inverse Browns-Johnson curve" or whatever.

My Trade Secrets today. Trump going ahead with steel tariffs is obvs @robarmstrong.bsky.social's fault for the "TACO" trade needling. I posit TABASCO (Trump Angry Because Armstrong Said "Chickens Out") as the new paradigm. (Also, Trump's broad powers over tariffs & taxes are far worse than steel.)

#accurate

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

🚨PSA for anyone using GPT in human subjects research🚨 A judge has ruled that OpenAI must retain ChatGPT and API data indefinitely, with few exceptions. This might have implications for your IRB compliance and the security of your participants' data. 1/

On the left, residents cleaning up their streets. On the right, federalized Guard arriving to quell "violent mobs." You can see some holding their assault rifles. www.nytimes.com/live/2025/06...

Early in this app there was an ethos that if someone said something you disagreed with, you could just ignore them. I liked that better.

To mark the 50th anniversary of the Journal of Medieval History we’ve asked eight distinguished historians each to use an article from the journal’s first five years as a jumping off point to discuss historiographical trends. @tandfresearch.bsky.social

🚨We have a new prompting report: Prompting a model with Chain of Thought is a common prompt engineering technique, but we find simple Chain-of-Thought prompts generally don’t help recent frontier LLMs, including reasoning & non-reasoning models, perform any better (but do increase time & costs)

I am always saying this: Equalioy hurts no one

I'm a breast cancer survivor. I'm likely to be a cancer patient again. I pray for cutting edge research to extend the time I have with my kids. This breaks my heart. It's going to lead to so much death.

Cannot stress enough that this is a pitiful action by a weak, scared, pathetic group of insecure, wannabe authoritarians, and they should be mocked until the end of time for wanting to bring in the military over some people protesting them at a Home Depot.

Seems like most people on here are anti-evil. That's the kind of insular groupthink that loses elections :/

Re-upping this “One First” post from April asking—and trying to answer—five questions about the domestic use of the military:

Have some zen.

What a shot.

Holy smokes! Our article is on the cover of The Lancet!!!!!!!!!! Nbd 💅

Very smart, high ROI initiative from the Spencer Foundation. Providing bridge funding for canceled NSF grants: 1) directs funds to projects already screened by a top-noch review process. 2) avoids imposing proposal prep costs on researchers. 3) ameliorates the disruption from GOP sabotage.

JPMORGAN: Trade war repercussions are “only just now taking full effect. .. federal and local spending is on track to slow to a 1%ar pace .. with the flow of new immigrants slowing to a standstill and deportations on the rise. “.. a period of sustained above-potential US growth is over.” 👀

How it started How it’s going
