I am delighted and honored to have been awarded the American Academy for Arts and Sciences' Sarton Prize for the History of Science! Many thanks to the countless people whose support helped make this possible. www.amacad.org/news/victor-...

How Trump foreign policy in Europe has already weakened US position vis-a-vis China. A thread, following Thailand's refoulement (illegal deportation of asylum seekers) of Uyghur men who fled there in 2014. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/27/w...

Thailand deports dozens of Uyghurs to China despite torture fears

I won't be in London on 5 May, but if I was, this is where I'd go (due to how much I like the works I've read by @robgmacfarlane.bsky.social and never heard him speak in public) howtoacademy.com/events/rober... --here's hoping I'll get a chance to hear him someday in California...

The first books on Burma & Thailand, respectively, that had a deep impact on me were Finding George Orwell in Burma & Siam Mapped, so having the author of each blurb my forthcoming book, which deals with both places (details about it here globalreports.columbia.edu/books/the-mi...) means so much

I'm so glad that both Emma Larkin and Thongchai Winichakul, authors from whom I have learned so much about Burma and Thailand, have written endorsements (see below) for The Milk Tea Alliance: Inside Asia's Struggle Against Autocracy and Beijing, coming June 10 from @columbiagr.bsky.social

Very excited to be able to share, via this publisher's message, two blurbs for my forthcoming @columbiagr.bsky.social book, my first to deal with Thailand & Burma; the endorsements are from Thongchai Winichakul & Emma Larkin, both mean a lot to me myemail.constantcontact.com/---Coming-so...

Extremely exciting and very timely #NewBook alert on the #MilkTeaAlliance. Should be of interest to scholars of transnational activism and anti-authoritarian movements around the globe!

Back in January I had the great pleasure of hosting @jwassers.bsky.social for a chat about the new edition of his book, ‘Vigil: The Struggle for Hong Kong‘ at the MCI. You can now watch our conversation here: youtu.be/FCput3z1ji0?...

Well worth a listen. Hadn’t been aware of the role of ‘Do you hear the people sing’ in the Hong Kong protests - and the Cantonese version: 問誰未發聲 - Who hasn’t spoken out yet.

Flattered my book Let Only Red Flowers Bloom, on identity and Xi Jinping's China, is on @foreignpolicy.com 's list of most anticipated books for this year with a lot of great-looking China books coming out too! foreignpolicy.com/2024/12/31/2...

“At least two human rights organizations that are China-focused but are based here in the U.S. and have received U.S. funding in the past tell NPR they have already been approached by people linked to the Chinese government who are offering to introduce them to new, China-based funders.”

Still thinking about these conversations. Ground-level and interdisciplinary, this ”Facts Under Fire” conversation was really illuminating. I was inspired by colleagues around the world who are working for communities’ health and dignity.

Ching Kwan Lee is always worth reading on any topic she turns her attention to, so I have been looking forward greatly to reading this long in the works book of hers on her native city (due out this summer) www.hup.harvard.edu/books/978067...
