SCOOP: The Ebola outbreak in Uganda, which had seemed to be in retreat, has claimed a new victim: a four-year-old boy who died on Monday, according to a State Department cable viewed by The New York Times. nyti.ms/4h5Qfed

4 dairy herds in Nevada recently diagnosed with #H5N1 #birdflu were infected with a different version of the virus than has been spreading in cows elsewhere. Evidence of a second (at a minimum) spillover points to the challenge of stopping spread, experts say. www.statnews.com/2025/02/05/u...

U.S. physician colleagues - did you know that Ontario, Canada has 3 expedited pathways to practice in our province? All specialties have needs. We *really* need great family docs! www.cpso.on.ca/Physicians/R...

CBC's wall-to-wall coverage of this crisis is another great example of why we should value Canada's public broadcaster

Canada's new agency, Health Emergency Readiness Canada (HERC), which mostly exists as a press release, is meant to "strengthen preparedness for future health emergencies" like USA's BARDA. CDN Marburg & Ebola-Sudan vaccine candidates a good test... as recent support has been from BARDA, not Canada!

With simultaneous outbreaks of Marburg in Tanzania, Ebola-Sudan in Uganda, and (suspected) Ebola in DRC, this op-ed from @jwnickerson.bsky.social & I on Canada stumbling to get (great) vaccine research from the lab to patients remains depressingly current. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...

In just 2 weeks, there have been reports of 3 outbreaks of 3 different viral hemorrhagic fevers: 1. Marburg (Tanzania) 2. Ebola (DRC, important: these are unconfirmed cases) 3. Ebola-Sudan (Uganda) These are high-consequence outbreaks in a fragmented global health world. Not good. IDSky MedSky

At the start of a week that feels chaotic and unpredictable, take 7 minutes and just enjoy this for all that it is - I guarantee you'll be better off for it.

The US government contributed 42.3% of all humanitarian funding in 2024. There are an estimated 307 million people in need of humanitarian assistance right now, in 2025. If this stop work order applies to humanitarian assistance, the impact will be devastating. www.politico.com/news/2025/01...

Biochemist Gertrude B. Elion was born #OTD in 1918. Co-winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine, she developed a remarkable array of important pharmaceuticals using “rational drug design” that focused on differences in the biochemistry of healthy cells and pathogens. 🧪 👩‍🔬 🦠

Will also add that PubMed - which indexes millions of medical articles, and makes citations and many full text articles available free of charge as a public good - is an NIH product. If it disappears, it’s not unrealistic to think that academic medicine will be massively slowed for years.

#Measles is a humanitarian issue, as @jwnickerson.bsky.social and I wrote last year: theconversation.com/measles-is-a...

WHO & Tanzanian Ministry of Health confirms one case of Marburg in the Kagera region, after last week reporting that there were no cases that tested positive following an announcement from WHO of a group of cases. Really unclear outbreak situation right now, but Marburg cases are never good. #MedSky

Some good news: Manitoba has agreed to accept a patient from Gaza in need of urgent surgical care that is unavailable because of the war. The patient was referred through MSF’s medical teams in the region, and I’m proud to have played a role in this. news.gov.mb.ca/news/?archiv...

Not good news: @who.int just announced a new Marburg outbreak in Tanzania. “As of 11 January 2025, nine suspected cases were reported including eight deaths across two districts – Biharamulo and Muleba. … Results are pending official confirmation.” 🧪 #IDsky www.who.int/emergencies/...

There's an extremely volatile situation unfolding in Masisi, in Eastern DRC. We currently estimate that >10,000 people have fled and sought safety in the Masisi General Hospital and the MSF base, the vast majority of them women and children, because of fighting in and around Masisi town.
