'A lot of the health care workers I spoke to said that it wasn’t that they couldn’t handle doing their job. It was that they couldn’t handle not being able to do their job. They saw all of the institutional and systemic factors that prevented them from providing the care that they wanted to provide.

Tony Hunter wearing a hat made by his lab out of yeast replication felt at an event marking his 50 years at the Salk Institute. A true wizard and curator of science. And, by heck, did the US used to build magnificent edifices to science. What a glorious building.

Turns out the US Constitution is as unsinkable as the Titanic - it just looked invincible because no one had thought it would be so intensely attacked from within all three pillars of government that were meant to protect it.

My first ever hole in one…

In consolation for the US loss to Canada I screened 51 BioRxiv manuscripts tonight. 🇨🇦

We would like to thank a certain Stable Genius for his invaluable contributions to the Canadian psychological warfare program.

We scientists need to up our game in communicating what we do as it helps to be able to describe your work lucidly to reviewers and the public. But professional science communicators need to come to the forefront too. What is happening in the USA is undermining all the good that you do.

Siting a plane right now at Pearson and it occurred to me that the Delta flight was 180 degree flipped - as a tube. If it had come to a rest in any other position (except right way up) exiting would have been extremely difficult.

The indiscriminate firing of scientists in their (up to 2 year) probationary period is being largely ignored by the public. Why? Because their value, contributions & expertise to society are underappreciated. Joining other unappreciated groups; LGBTQ+, those with disabilities, indigenous peoples…

Remember their names: American Airlines, Delta, JetBlue, Southwest, and United.

It's going to take Toronto Council at least 3 weeks to clear the current snow accumulation (30-40 inches). We're safe as houses from all the King's men.

The time is ripe? Doctors Manitoba campaigning to lure U.S. docs to Canada where they can ‘practice with stability and certainty’ Political tension among Americans could offer an opportunity to recruit.

Well, he’s gotta try to make up for the, er, $348 billion in annual exports to Canada in 2024 that he’s doing his best to crater. Maybe try North Korea next? The stable genius strikes again.

If you, like RFK Jr, wish to promote quack science, shut down vaccines, promote supplements and other grifts, you have to sucker punch real scientists, undermine their credibility and futures. It is an utter disaster.

Saw my first Cyber Truck in Toronto, limping down a ploughed incline with three cars behind . Likely didn’t have winter tyres because it was squirreling and those are for wimps (wonderfully improved mobility passing snow). And they’re butt ugly from behind, just a grey rectangular bloc.

Entirely predictable. Zuckerberg doesn’t believe in equal opportunity, inclusivity or reversing years of discrimination and clearly never has. Trump has revealed the hypocrisy of those who seek favour rather than seeking fairness and opportunity.

Atlantic Canadians are invited to a public virtual conference on cancer and Precision Medicine (March 15, 2025). Registration is required and free: mun.jotform.com/250295627862... Designed by patients from Atlantic Canada: includes patients, caregivers, healthcare providers, leaders, as speakers.

Is jingoism ramping up (the photo is from the NYT)?

Imagine the tricouncils, CFI, CRC, NRC, Genome Canada being unable to post any opportunities, effectively ceasing any new funding, whilst any federal scientists in any department hired in the past couple of years are given until the end of the day to leave. What hell hath thou wrought, America?

The amazing thing about RNA vaccines (aside the many years it took to perfect them and their LNP carriers), is that they reduce time to develop by an order of magnitude and can be rapidly applied to not only infectious diseases but cancer. And they are incredibly safe.

May be SpaceX was simply a handy ruse to extract massive amounts of money from the US government to pay to train “engineers” as a private army to take it over.

What’s something so ubiquitous that it becomes invisible? This is a remarkable essay on the engraving machine font that finally is given some attention (via Daring Fireball). A really beautiful story, font fanatic or not. aresluna.org/the-hardest-...

A federal election in Canada must be called by Oct, 2025. What are parties stances on: 1. Support for Canadian focused companies and institutions (inc. CBC, manufacturing, transportation)? 2. Preventing encroachment of the worst of the US (privatized medicine, gun laws, crypto, education for sale)?
