So, our timekeeping system is really ancient and obsolete, but it's not that bad. This would only be possible, maybe, with a highly implausible conspiracy b/w a LOT of people.

One thing to note about the difference between SV startup culture and govt: it's perfectly fine if someone in govt says "last week I processed 27 purchase orders." Govt can be improved, but there's no profit motive and the key features are reliability and consistency.

On a slightly different note, I've seen a lot of reporting that Caine's callsign is "Razin," but my experience of Air Force callsigns tells me it's far more likely to be "Raisin." I'm sure someone in his flight school class will let us know.

Dear Manager, this week: 1. I went to the doctor 2. I went to the mountains 3. I looked to the children 4. I drank from the fountains 5. I sailed my ship of safety till I sank it

Today (Feb 22) in 1943, three courageous young people in the group White Rose were executed for distributing anti-Nazi leaflets in Germany. Sophie Scholl: "The greatest damage is caused by the silent majority that just wants to survive, submit and go along with everything."

1. Never gonna give you up 2. Never gonna let you down 3. Never gonna run around 4. And 5. Desert you

Haven’t gotten the email, but I may respond “did my cyber awareness training.”

Seconded. Also, I’m pretty sure they’re doing these on Saturday to deny us any rest. It’s akin to keeping the lights and loud music on in the cell between interrogations.

I spent the entire week dealing with DOGE BS

I really wish I had taken a good screenshot of these tweets.

The history of the Tea Party movement indicates this is false. Screaming at members of Congress at town halls gets media attention and creates the impression that a majority of voters are livid, even if it's really a small number of people. It's very effective for the people screaming.

The most vehement theocrats believe in an angry God who shares their hatreds. Nobody ever demands religious dominion over this earth to comfort the poor and afflicted.

+1 "Removing them in this way will not make the military more lethal, but it could make the problem of politicization of the military that much harder to manage,” Feaver said.

“…this is an…opportunity for those in rural districts to step forward and have a hefty…impact on the course of Virginia politics and policies. Often times, Ds in those districts lament not having any real influence. Here is a real chance to change that.” www.dailykos.com/stories/2025...

Most of the people who understand how DoD finances work do not wear uniforms. The civilians who do will be running gutted offices struggling to just keep the lights on. I suspect these cuts will set back the push for auditability by years.

A certain amount of trolling in this, but my NAL take is that it opens up future admins to charging gun dealers with large transfers to Mexico with material support to terrorism. Much of what is happening rests on an assumption that liberals will never win again or will revert to prior norms.

Preventing famine is waste.

Firing General Brown and Admiral Franchetti is not a complete surprise to civmil watchers, but pulling this guy from retirement for chairman definitely is It’s a strong signal that promotion to top positions will require complete ideological conformity from here on out

Picking a retired 3-star with a Natl Guard background is likely to give you a chairman entirely dependent on the president with no independent base of support in the services. It's the same reason someone (Dan Drezner?) said they expected weak cabinet secretaries in key departments.

My military career was possible because my wife found a career that followed her around the country and allowed her to adjust hours when I deployed. I’d have left after my first deployment otherwise.

Oh God, am I going to be on the same side as Liz Cheney AND Niall Ferguson?

I'm not much of a Bible scholar. Could someone help me out with where it covers gun rights? kansasreflector.com/2025/02/20/e...

Gonna be fun when thousands of people on TDY suddenly have no way to get home or pay their hotel bills.

My people

The four horsemen of the apocalypse—Newt Gingrich, Mitch McConnell, Roger Ailes, and Rupert Murdoch.

Truth from the Diva for everyone struggling.

I don’t think I’m getting fired and part of me wishes I were. There will be hundreds of people left who still count on me to do my best for them, but that feels like a cop out. Especially knowing that this is just the first wave.

Even if this is true in a very technical sense (e.g. no cuts to disability payments or medical eligibility) it is false if veterans cannot access care due to staff shortages. Also, veterans hiring preference is a benefit, and it's effectively gutted. news.va.gov/138326/va-se...

I remember not that long ago when my right wing relatives were OUTRAGED that banks might have to report more transactions to the IRS. It was the Deep State at work trying to oppress them. Hope they never cross Elon or Big Balls.
