Final demo handaxes before I swap shifts with Nic! 🏺🏺 If you’re in the area, Nic will be here until 5!

First demo piece finished 😃

Thanks again to @kabweordie.bsky.social for helping with this flint knapping video demonstration for my online students. I had way too much fun editing this video and adding the intro. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Anho...

I made this Fort Ancient point out of a piece of Ste. Genevieve chert. Arrowpoints like this were made in Kentucky from 1000-1750 CE. This particular variation would have been made by Fort Ancient people during the later part of that date range. #flintknapping #archaeology

Knapping demo for the opening of a new exhibit at the AZMNH in Mesa called THRIVE: The First People Yesterday, Today, and Forever. Come by! Nic or myself will be here until 5 pm. 🏺🏺

I just found out that around 20% of the neanderthal genome still exists today in living people!! No individual person has more than 3 or 4% but we don't all have the same bits. If you add up all the bits we've found, about a fifth of the Neanderthal genome is still present on earth today.

Handaxes on the move! We’ve been busy making lots of replica prehistoric goodies for Christmas presents. But a couple found themselves on a plane with @profaliceroberts.bsky.social heading to Australia for her Cells to Civilisation tour! Here’s one of Palaeolithic handaxes being made: 🏺 🦣 🧪

I am excited finally to have my hands on the very first copy of the third edition of "Sense and Nonsense: Evolutionary Perspectives on Human Behaviour", co-authored with @gillianrbrown1.bsky.social. The paperback will be available in just over two weeks time, from Oxford University Press.

🏺 So lovely! Age without context is tricky, the form of this isn't clearly distinctive to Late #Neanderthals, but it may have been resharpened asymmetrically (eg pic) which you do see in the Late Middle Palaeolithic. Worthing Museum actually has another likely LMP biface, from field at Woodshill.

One of the large cutting tools we just recovered from a new layer, >400,000 years old, at Amanzi Springs Area 1 in South Africa.

Hey everyone! I figured I should do a quick introductory post. I am a PhD candidate in archaeology 🏺 at Arizona State University and a OYO faculty member at Glendale Community College in biological anthropology. I am broadly interested in lithic technology and early Homo sapiens archaeology 1/5

There’s something extraordinary about this otherwise pretty standard Late Bronze Age axehead: A human fingerprint. A real, visible and tangible connection to someone from 3000 years ago. If that doesn’t give you goosebumps, idk what will. 🥹 #FindsFriday Link to record: finds.org.uk/database/art...

Hello to all the new followers who found me over the weekend! If you want to hear about the record of Neanderthal archaeology I and my colleagues work with, here's a podcast I recorded with Tristan Hughes from the brilliant History Hit Ancients series. 500k yrs in 47mins 🦣 🏺 pca.st/episode/7a41...
