Well, thats a first, even my own camera caugh this Falcon 9 upperstage re-entry, also featuring my @satnogs.bsky.social antenna :)

This week at my fed job I was supposed to be attending an Incident Command System training about how to set up information centers during crises (like a volcanic eruption). That's been cancelled, including motel reservations and per diem for meals, which will take $$ away from small businesses. FML.

We live in a time where "genius" and "specialization" are deemed of utmost importance. However, to understand any complex system like the Earth, you need to make connections across disciplines. This requires you to be intellectually curious, humble and honest www.discovermagazine.com/planet-earth...

Trump and Musk are taking a wrecking ball to the U.S. government. Their illegal, arbitrary, and mass federal worker cuts undermine essential services for the American people—right down to the most basic functions of government, to break it beyond repair.

Gregg is a former Marine and Forest Service ranger. He's saved the lives of hikers dangling off a cliff or going through cardiac arrest, and he's bravely fought forest fires to save small rural towns. 100% of his salary is paid by WA state. Elon fired him. Share his story.

"We are just moving people from low productivity roles in the government sector to higher productivity roles in the private sector. The net effect of that will be an increase in the output of useful goods and services which increases the standard of living of people." - an actual thing that guy

Whew, what a week. I had this map for the Iditarod all ready to go, and then the race officials announced a new route with one day to spare before the story published. I had to rebuilt it basically from scratch. Always give yourself a buffer when downloading raster data, folks. You may need it. 1/3

Apparently the gutting of the National Science Foundation is underway at the moment. "More to come." One can debate whether cuts are warranted, but the mindless, know-nothing fashion in which they are being carried out is inexcusable. This will damage US science for generations.

NEW: NSF confirmed that they fired 168 employees today, out of their staff of ~1,500 feds. This includes some people who'd finished their 1-year probationary periods, which were extended to 2-years last month without explanation. More to come.

About 1,300 employees at CDC are expected to be fired by the Trump admin today, and more at NIH Those at CDC include entire first year class of CDC's "disease detectives," the Epidemic Intelligence Service Some at CDC are referring to it as the Valentine's Day Massacre www.cnn.com/politics/liv...

"The country is less safe. These are the deployable assets critical for investigating new threats, from anthrax to Zika," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a former top-ranking CDC official and alumna of the program, in a message.

CW: #USpol They're cutting anyone they think they can get away with. They don't care what it does to anyone, in the short term or the long term. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/cdc-disease-detectives-doge-cuts-health-agencies/

Why yes, I am in fact critical of combustion engines. It's about time we seriously move away from their dominance in transportation. And "AI" is too big and amorphous *not* to be skeptical of, whether or not you see value in some aspect of it. https://mstdn.social/@vruz/113998673985348447

"Chat with Joan of Arc’s AI", an apparently real thing advertised by a French tourist attraction. I am disappointed the the answer to "Bonjour Jeanne! How are you?" isn't "Not bad, considering that the English burned me at the stake 600 years ago."

Getting ready for a new phone, and looking at how much space apps take in my iCloud backup. By far the largest app by backup size is the NY Times app, at 1.3 GB. Astonishingly, it seems to back up its own cache to iCloud storage. What is the point of that? Why would I want anything backed up from

This sure raises a lot of questions, beyond the eye-roll-inducing title. The hiring process for DOGE is apparently, "be a millionaire and call up some of your friends"? They are not an official government agency in any sense, but they are hiring already and spinning up fast? Are they paying
