They solved quantum gravity in here but no one will ever know ⚛️

Back when I was an impecunious grad student and postdoc, owning a coffee maker felt like a luxury. Now I own one and I feel very fancy indeed.

Lost in Philosophy 🧵⚛️🧪 Sabine Hossenfelder coined 'Lost in Math' for physicists who (allegedly) get so enamoured of the mathematical beauty of their theories that they believe they must be true. There is a related but separate phenomenon, which I call 'Lost in Philosophy.' 1/N

🧪 humor (David Attenborough voice) In the harsh, unforgiving world of academia, the stakes are high and the competition for resources, fierce. Behold the young academic engaging in the fascinating ritual of trying to sound smarter and more knowledgable than they truly are. 1/3

Cardiff University is threatening up to half of its staff in pure and applied mathematics with compulsory redundancy, despite the department returning a significant surplus to the university. You can see (and sign) the open letter appealing against this here: t.co/APFl4jkQb5 🧪⚛️

A thread about Meghnad Saha(1893-1956), progenitor of the Saha equation. 🧵🧪⚛️ Meghnad almost dropped out of school because his village did not even have a high school. Eventually a couple in a different village let him stay with them and go to school, in exchange for him tending to their cow.

Being a scientist means gazing into the profound mysteries of nature with deep curiosity and wondering "Can I get a paper out of this?" 🧪

SHOs before bros: Sidney Coleman, probably 🧪⚛️

Co-author (with Cecile Dewitt-Morette and Margaret Dillard-Bleick) of one of the most magisterial and intimidating books on geometry and physics out there.

Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat passed away today at the age of 101. She was one of the pioneers of mathematical general relativity.🧪

When you first learn about RG flow of coupling constants. Niche ⚛️ joke.

Did you know that Robert Oppenheimer was a pioneer in black hole research? My article on Oppie and his biggest contribution to physics ⚛️🧪

My reaction to learning that most of the quantum pioneers were in their 20s when they made their big discoveries In my 20s: Well, at least Schrodinger was 38 when he made his big discovery At 39: Oh well 🧪

During the quantum revolution, the new physics was often referred to as Knabenphysik or "Boy's physics." In 1925, Heisenberg was 24, Pauli 25, Dirac and Jordan 23. 1/2 ⚛️🧪

I asked some students to measure the frequencies of different colors of light, but they did not do the experiment and made up the results. I guess you could say....they reported fake νs.
