I mean, "don't be on Substack at all, they have a very well documented Nazi problem you're aiding and abetting by sending them traffic," too, but this applies to all auto-subscribe ploys.

this is the one i think of as my ghibli story. i will leave anyone familiar with my... oeuvre to wonder what the hell that means for a few more days

I am so excited to share “The Hungry Years” with everyone, and just as thrilled to check out the rest of the work here. It’s great to see so many familiar names.

This is a pretty good lineup. 👀 I’m excited for it!

“I love a bloody queer revenge story,” says @bookjockeyalex.bsky.social of “Full, Empty Houses” by @plangdineple.bsky.social in the Spring issue of Kaleidotrope.

It's the Summer issue now, but the sentiment remains the same!

The thing I love about this, beyond the sentences themselves, is that it further underlines how a story's "hook" can be so many different things. These sentences all encourage readers to continue, but I don't think anyone would argue they do so in remotely the same ways.

Taking a cue from BCS & Kaleidotrope here are the opening sentences from the half dozen stories, half dozen poems, and a few other things in the new issue of LCRW, #50, which comes out tomorrow.

This was short and more thought provoking than I expected. Beautifully heart-wrenching.

I can hardly keep up with the responses to this, which is why I haven’t reposted or replied to anything yet. But I heartily encourage everyone to check out the replies and quote-posts!

FFer Read of the Day: "Mabinogion" by @mckatie.bsky.social in @kaleidotrope.bsky.social kaleidotrope.net/spring-2025/...

Well this has definitely gotten a lot of response!

A lot of fantastic responses to this question—some serious, some less so. Clearly people find, or fail to find, story titles in lots of different ways!

This is a terrible loss. I knew Helen only a little from online, and from having recently had the honor of publishing their short fiction, but my most sincere condolences to their friends and family.

In my own experience, there are two kinds of story titles: the ones that occur to you immediately and effortlessly, and which never seem like anything less than perfect, and the ones you struggle endlessly to find and hone, and which you are never entirely sure about or satisfied with. 😀

If you’re a writer, how do you come up with story titles?

Just think—you could read Kaleidotrope right now!

Strange Horizons publishes a lot of fantastic work—and have been doing so since before Kaleidotrope was even the glimmer of a thought at the back of my mind. If you aren’t reading them, you absolutely must, and if you can afford to help support them, you absolutely should!

Thank you to everyone who helped us over the $10,000 line! We're also thankful to everyone spreading the word. We're still only halfway to our base goal! If you haven't donated yet, we would very much appreciate your support. Check the link ⬇️ to see if any of this year's tiers catch your eye!

HEY READ MY KILLER STORY

Your story’s opening lines have to do a lot of heavy lifting, but there’s no lack of different ways they can do it.

This is fun because I actually spent aaages trying to get this opening right! After many drafts, I decided to just directly parrot the style of Pwyll Pendeuic Dyfed (the 1st Branch of the Mabinogi) which was the original inspiration for the story. So this opening line is (kind of) 1000 years old!! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿
