I somehow don't understand how someone can be a "genius" and "savvy" leader and at the same time lose 40 combat aircraft, including bombers, in one day, in their own parking lot.

Trump, due to his mental inadequacy, reliably detects opportunities for abuse, that is, in situations where a considerate, decent, and educated person would strive for something, he does the exact opposite. It is not an insult, but an observation, to infer that whoever voted for him is a sadist.
