58% of NPFB clients are disabled. We're glad the govt has U-turned to protect current PIP claimants - but future disabled people still face cuts. Tell your MP: vote against this flawed Bill and rebuild trust with the disabled community. #WelfareReform #PIP #DisabledRights

✍️ We’ve written to the Department for Work and Pensions expressing serious concerns about the proposed reforms to welfare. ✂️ They risk undermining social security as a human right and worsening poverty. These are not just policy choices—they’re human rights issues.

Secretary of State's statement on Universal Credit/PIP reform is out + Terms of Reference for Timms PIP review: - Confirms what we knew: current claimants protected, future disabled people hit hard. - Employment Support money brought forward a bit but amount stays the same 1/2

I’m always pro-disabled people leading what affects them but the reality is, many disabled and chronically ill people are paying a huge physical price for fighting tomorrow’s welfare bill. Many are suffering more pain and exhaustion from campaigning, all whilst in a brutal heatwave. 1/2

The updated poverty impact assessment for the disability benefits cuts once again offsets the impact of not proceeding with the previous government's proposed changes to the WCA The impact of actual changes happening in the real world is likely to be closer to 250k people pushed into poverty

It's possible I was too generous here. The government's briefing suggests only the existing UC health rate will be uprated. The halved rate for most new claimants will presumably still be frozen www.gov.uk/government/n...

NEW: Disabled people already on PIP will be judged by the original criteria when up for reassessment, The Guardian can confirm. But those that come off the benefit and then later reapply will be treated as new and scored by the tougher rules. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

How can we finance universal #SocialProtection in a world shaped by inequality & debt crises? I joined @socialprotection.org , @afdbgroup.bsky.social, @unicef.org for a timely conversation about the need for political will ahead of #FfD4. socialprotection.org/learn/podcas...

I think everyone would agree that eligibility to disability benefits should be decided based on need. The government's concessions further erode this principle. The 4 point rule is arbitrary. Restricting UC health based on age is unfair. And creating a 2-tiered dis ben system is unjustifiable.

This — as the always sharp @pollardtom.bsky.social points out — is where despite the “concessions” yesterday, the impact of disability benefit cuts will be felt. On future claimants. Creating a two tier system with an arbitrary cut off date when people’s disability-related costs miraculously halve.

Now that the focus is on future PIP claims rather than those currently on the benefit, it's worth highlighting that the proposed assessment change is due to have a much greater impact on the proportion of people from this group who will miss out on support by 2029-30 as a result

The government's concessions on disability benefit cuts don’t go far enough. People who become disabled will not benefit from this watering down and trying work will only become even more risky for current claimants. The government must go back to the drawing board.

Concessions for those already on disability & health benefits are welcome, and a testament to all the work that has gone into campaigning against these cuts But people who need support in future will face a much harsher and meaner system if the amended proposals are implemented

"Public Law Project research demonstrates that the financial and psychological impact of overpayment debt recovery on individual claimants can be severe." Baroness Lister spoke in the House of Lords yesterday about the harmful impact of overpayment debt caused by DWP error ⬇️

I would wait for the exact legislative wording of these “concessions” before expressing any view, given that the entire exercise seems based on a euphemistic use of the word “reform” to mean “cuts”. So “concessions” could really mean just about anything. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

How will the proposed disability benefit cuts impact disabled people? Today we’re sharing the story of one of the people we’ve helped: Anita*. The cuts could mean she loses over £8k per year (43% of her income)❗ New blog out now: medium.com/p/1ab8959922a1

I'm not sure "if you think about it, cuts to disabled people's benefits are basically the same kind of thing as minimum wage rises & free school meals" is a line that's really going to fly (from today's London Playbook)

Excellent thread by @sanktionsfrei.bsky.social on their findings of the experience of people receiving the Bürgergeld (Citizen’s Income). What is worrying is the new German government’s intention to scale back and tighten support, rather than ensuring a decent standard. bsky.app/profile/sank...

Good to see today’s Guardian Editorial mention my story that women will lose out under the new PIP rules. If a system leaves women sitting in her bloodied underwear because she can no longer pay the care worker that used to help her get to the toilet, it is one no MP should be backing.

The government’s disability cuts will have a “devastating” impact on women’s health and dignity and could breach equality law, experts warn. The new rules won’t take into account menstruation or some women’s extra toilet requirements. My exclusive: www.theguardian.com/world/2025/j...

As mentioned in the welfare bill amendment, the Government has not yet published any analysis on the employment effects of its benefit cuts. Here at @resfoundation.bsky.social, we gave it a go last month...

Ahead of a crucial vote on cuts to disability benefits, our new evidence casts doubt on whether jobs are even available for disabled people facing cuts 📢 The analysis found that the parts of the country among the hardest hit by the cuts have fewer job opportunities 1/3

👏🏾 to all 108.

This could be the fatal blow these cuts-posing-as-reforms deserve Supporting more disabled people into work is a welcome aspiration, but cutting benefits for this group to meet an imposed savings target, with no meaningful consultation, is neither supportive of nor justified by that objective

Labour MPs launch major rebellion to stop welfare bill

This unquantifiable aspect of (not) belonging is a key to part of the German constitutional principle of “Existenzminimum” (basic minimum subsistence level), which should guarantee participation in social and cultural life. If you can’t belong/participate living on benefits, is the benefit adequate?

This event looks unmissable. And yet I'll have to miss it, as I'm committed to chairing something else at precisely that time.
