I am down to the last 1000 words of my book draft and writing about hair workers, makers in the #c19th who were skilled in the art of sentimental jewellery. They wove & braided hair as memorials to loved ones, part of mourning etiquette. Mid c19th dresses @metcostume.bsky.social #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

#Ootd are these three nightgowns owned by Katharine Hepburn. Hepburn appreciated quality, fabrics, and fit. These three nightgowns show her appreciation of private luxury. Two do not have known dates, but were purchased sometime between 1925 and 1975 (when she was 18-68).

Harriett Joyce made this dress for her #wedding to Percy Sams in 1899. She was a lady’s maid and was particularly skilled at dressmaking, choosing a purple #tailormade for its practicality beyond the wedding day itself #V&A #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

French painter Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun was born #OnThisDay in 1755. In 1783, she painted Marie Antoninette wearing a robe en chemise, also known as the chemise à la reine, similar to this Indian cotton muslin example from the Manchester Art Gallery collection. #fashionhistory #art

I think those with a certain bust-age (myself included) might not find this 1974 #YSL evening dress very containing. I do love the nonchalant wrap and drape of red silk, however, with the band of gold at the neck #museumatfit #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

Ok ok, so I have another 1940s Valentina pinafore and dress for Katharine Hepburn. It is very similar to the ensemble that Hepburn wore for the stage production of The Philadelphia Story in 1939. This one, however, was for her personal wardrobe. In her memoir, Hepburn writes that she wore this dress

In a 1949 edition of the French magazine L’Officiel, this red and black satin gown by Robert Piguet is described as a dance dress. It would certainly frame the body as it whirled, one shoulder bare and the waist cinched with a black belt #museumatfit #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡

I wonder if this ca. 1870 gown might have been worn as a wedding dress when it was new. Anyway, just marveling over the density of that self-fabric trim on the skirts! All of those strips of silk are bound with bias bands on the top and bottom edges, which represents so much work. 🗃️🪡 #19thc

Next was this other 1940s Valentina dress, also made of silk organza and from Hepburn's personal collection. The heavily ruched bodice with broad shoulders was particularly good for Herpburn's figure. She wore either a similar dress or the same one that had since faded to the St. James' Theatre

Next was this 1939 Valentina ensemble that Katharine Hepburn wore during the stage production of The Philadelphia Story. I posted about this dress 3 years ago and still remember it because it is so gorgeous. In fact, the audience was said to have gasped when Hepburn came out on stage. It is another
