On this day in 1984, the Ethiopian writer Baalu Girma vanished, almost certainly kidnapped & murdered by the Derg regime in retaliation for his novel Oromay. The brutal regime’s attempt to silence him failed, as Oromay is a beloved & popular classic. Thank you Ato Baalu. We remember. #bannedbooks

Amharic fiction coming in 2025 ! Baalu Girma's 'Oromay' coming from Soho Press in the US www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/768953... and MacLehose in the UK www.hachette.co.uk/titles/baalu... 2/2025. This is fantastic ! (Basically nothing gets translated from Amharic, so this is big, big news.)

This is a wonderful Christmas present!
