Why we have and need a US Department of Education 🚨 New from @brookings.edu scholars, an initiative to walk through the federal role in education, particularly the ongoing need for a Department of Education and all it does www.brookings.edu/collection/w...

With so many crazy things happening, focusing on them all is impossible. So, I am trying to pay attention to the things I have expertise The new admin floated handing over FAFSA and student loan repayment guidance to AI. Here is why that is a terrible idea #EduSky www.newamerica.org/education-po...

The explainer on DOGE’s galaxy-brained FAFSA chatbot proposal we’ve been needing.

I'm imagining the scene in Matilda where Miss Honey and the children scramble to hide any signs of joy from Miss Trunchbull. Miss Trunchbull hated children - so do the people making and enforcing these policies that erase instead of celebrate children's identities www.nytimes.com/2025/02/13/w...

I've been working (w/Lindsay Page and @catherinematah.bsky.social) on projects using chatbots in higher education for the past few years. There are many promising uses for AI in supporting students through complicated college processes - and many important guardrails to include when you do that!

What can we expect from the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights over the next four years? @rachelmarisa.bsky.social provides a brief history of the OCR and considers the legal and illegal avenues the Trump administration may use to reshape it for the president's agenda.

New and important: we built a federal expenditure tracker. All expenditure line items that are available on the Daily Treasury Statement. USAID was zeroed out on 1/28 and has been at zero ever since. www.hamiltonproject.org/data/trackin... #EconSky

This is the thing I had conveniently forgotten about 2017. So much of my time was wasted that I can never get back. Which is... probably part of the point.

Yes, we suspected a primer on the Impoundment Control Act would be useful, we just didn't know it would be *this* useful today. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/a-pr...

Sharing this great explainer on impoundment from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities that my Brookings colleagues pointed me to last month. TL;DR: Impounding funds appropriated by Congress is illegal www.cbpp.org/research/fed...

The US Dept of Ed is looking to hire an Economist as a career position at the GS-13 level. The deadline is in 3 days! Could be a great opportunity (and happy to tell you more from my time interacting with that team). www.usajobs.gov/job/825004800

Stereotype threat: a once-dominant idea in social psychology that shaped how we think about identity and performance. But what happens when the evidence crumbles? A deep dive into the failed replications, the myths, and what it all means. Read my latest essay: open.substack.com/pub/michaeli...

So excited that a Brookings (@brookings.edu) starter pack is available - follow my brilliant colleagues! go.bsky.app/J9mhKsX

Our friends had to change their son's child care--for his final year-- because they were both ordered back to the office after 3 years of WFH. That adds significant driving time in the opposite direction of their son's child care program www.washingtonpost.com/business/202...

President Biden will join us at Brookings tomorrow to reflect on his administration’s middle-out, bottom-up economic playbook and the future of the American economy. Tune in for his remarks at this link: www.brookings.edu/events/growi...
