In the news today: the trial begins in Australia of Erin Patterson, who will argue that her poisoning of her in-laws and sister with death cap mushrooms was a 'terrible accident'. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Good morning #InverteFest. No moth trap today, so here's some bug art from my Insecta deck. I illustrated each card in colour pencil, & drew each insect individually (no copy-pasting of bugs, even on the high number cards.) You can get the last few decks, prints, etc at lycomorpha.etsy.com 🐞🐝🐜

A barrel jellyfish (Rhizostoma pulmo) or dustbin-lid jelly for #InverteFest today. Blooms of these jellies are farmed off the coast of South Wales for their collagen 🐑 Here is my blogpost about it www.kathryngarner.co.uk/blog/jellyfi... #scicomm #illustration

A glow worm (Lampyris noctiluca) for #InverteFest today. From my blogpost about how glow worm venom could be the source of a novel pain killer www.kathryngarner.co.uk/blog/glow-wo... Biro, gouache, day glo paint sticks and a sharpie on paper 🐑 #illustration #scicomm

The Pardicolor Team doesn’t have a Bluesky yet, so I thought I would share this wonderful small grant opportunity. Last night I had fun with @kokolea.bsky.social and @noncompliantcyborg.bsky.social dock nightlighting and there were a ton of jellies. Photos of nudibranchs to come later today!

The textile cone snail (Conus textile) for #invertefest today 🐑 Cone snails inject lethal toxins to paralyse their prey. This #illustration is from my blogpost about why disulphide bonds are so important for conotoxin toxicity #scicomm www.kathryngarner.co.uk/blog/cone-sn...

Shakira's kid is usually the youngest contributor to the #InverteFest art books. Please leave some nice messages for him under Shakira's post to encourage a young bug nerd!!!

Okady doke, hello #InverteFest lovelies πŸ‘‹ I have a whole collection of accessories and jewellery inspired by all the beautiful bugs that ivy attracts… there’s ivy mining bees, moths, butterflies and even a golden hoverfly! www.loadofolbobbins.com/collections/... #MothsMatter #TeamMoth #BugSky

Another post for #InverteFest The Palo Verde Beetle, one of my favorite local invertebrates. They emerge during the monsoon season in the Sonoran Desert and freak people out due to their size and clumsy flying style. They're harmless and I love them. #beetle #ceramics #pottersofbluesky #pottery

Pufferfish skeleton. 🐑 These bones expand when the fish puffs up, creating a near-impossible-to-swallow defense against predators. Fun Fact: pufferfish carry deadly toxins, even more dangerous than cyanide! ☠️ #nature #fish #skeleton

#InverteFest is here, show me your invertebrate art. (don't forget to use the hashtag)

This #EarthDay I see that the Turtle Survival Alliance is launching their 5th Annual Turtle Month so I thought I would share these two prints 🐑πŸ§ͺ they commissioned of turtles supporting the Earth featuring endangered turtle species of special focus: one for turtles from North America, 🧡

How do microbial metabolites influence host physiology? They hop on the circulation line, obvs... (WIP) #sciart #microsky πŸ§ͺ

My house is overrun by pre-teen boys. Send help. In other news, here is an Aedes aegypti mosquito I've just finished. These mosquitoes can be genetically modified to help curb the spread of dengue, chikungunya, Zika and other diseases. Watercolour and blue biro on paper 🐑

Riding the wave of euphoria having submitted my final report to my client - 38 pages exploring avenues for collaboration between the UK and ASEAN countries in the field of Engineering Biology... such a great project! I met so many incredible people and learnt so much about Southeast Asia! #scicomm

Next iteration of my stand for double-sided artworks! I am combining aluminum wire, silver wire, and polymer clay (and transparent acrylic pouring medium as varnish). Trying to match the aesthetics of my #SciArt drawings - Feynman diagrams, geometry of physics of the gyroscope.

Colorado hydrological map / graphite and digital / 2025 Here it is, folks - my first map is finished (for now)! This is a pretty comprehensive look at the various and sundry bodies of water crisscrossing my beautiful home state. This map will be part of an upcoming field guide project! Stay tuned πŸ‘€

Here in the UK March was mild, very dry and very sunny (there was more sunshine than both July and August last year!). Here is a #dataviz summarising the UK weather/climate for the past year.

It is 100 years since the first international standard for insulin was adopted. Since then, insulin as a product has come a very long way. Read my *new blogpost* about the challenges of #insulin folding and how this produces variation in insulin product. #nephsky #medsky #chemsky #scicomm #sciart

My 7yo wanted to do some sewing today, which meant I have spent the entire day making this #dragon from one of her drawings. She did the stuffing and some of the sewing on the pink wing πŸ€¦πŸ»β€β™€οΈ
