📣 New zine! "Radical Books That Aren't a Slog : Leftist Book Recommendations for Newly Radical Folks." If you're a baby leftist looking for a place to start imagining new possibilities, here's 17 books to get you started! violetbfox.info/radicalbooks/ 📚

I wrote this piece three years ago. As Russian narratives are partotted by US officials, now, more than ever, scholars need to make sure we prevent disinformation from thriving: activehistory.ca/blog/2022/03...

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. SUCHO has now made publicly available the 50 TB of cultural heritage data archived from websites ranging from national archives to local museums, 3D tours of churches to children’s art centers. www.sucho.org/press-releas...

Your favorite examples of experimental literature? (Let's set aside debates about what that means for now. Just your favs.) Any genre, form, length, origin — as long as it's available in English translation.

STORYGRAPH 💜💚🔥

omg an earthquake!?

Behold! Today, after valiant and intense data-cleaning work over the past week by @fyodor76.bsky.social, she and I were able to produce this somewhat flawed but still beautiful to us network graph of all speech in Crime and Punishment ❤️ #digitaldostoevsky

If you're more comfortable learning to save sites via a website tool see zinebakery.com/homemade-zin... for the website/data-saving method the global group that's crowdsourced saving Ukraine sites for years (@sucho-org.bsky.social) uses to successfully teach many (public! kids!) how to back up data

Repeating: If there is data you use, archive it. Especially that proves inequity or studies marginalized communities. Census data. ArcGIS plug ins. Programs that connect different datasets. We are ging to have to bootstrap everything again, if we are lucky enough to rebuild.

Friends in the field (and in related disciplines!), please consider signing this petition/letter to the Dalhousie University admin. Dal has announced its intention to close the Russian Studies Department, where I had the luck to find my first academic job. docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

Today feels like a Feb 2022 deja vu when the story had broken that putin plans to install a puppet in Ukr and most thought that's totally possible. I was going blue in the face explaining Ukr won't accept/tolerate a puppet. Today's rant: Ukr won't accept a bad deal just because Trump wants them to.

Our updated website is now up and running at lostdetectives.wp.st-andrews.ac.uk! For anyone interested in the history of crime fiction, nineteenth-century literature, Russian literature, creative writing, graphic novels and more... @uniofstandrews.bsky.social @valmcdermid.bsky.social #crimefiction

a long shot, but do any book historians here know of scholarship quantifying the labor impacts of the Linotype in the late 19th century? I know the compositors unions protested & then passed rules about who could maintain Linotype machines—but I’m curious just how many compositors actually lost jobs

Looking forward to hosting this talk tomorrow!

"so much is lost in both scholarship and teaching in the university when competition takes priority over collaboration and the individual over the collective. ... it compromises the possibility of imagining ... new ways of being within the university" journals.publishing.umich.edu/jep/article/...

Still looking for readers if anyone is interested! Thanks to those of you who've already volunteered.

Someone sent a .gov site to me on Friday morning that they wanted archived well. Just like the emails I'd get from Ukraine at the start of SUCHO. I didn't know if it'd stay online past 2 PM Pacific. It never went down. In the end it was 27 GB. I just messaged it's done & safe. And now I'm crying.

My fellow Canadians! Did you know our trans friends in the US can't seek asylum in Canada despite their lives being in danger in their home country right now? Welp there is a petition you can sign to help change that! www.momentumcanada.net/pathways?rec...

Summing up possible US efforts to “absorb” Canada. Really disturbing stuff. As an American-Canadian, I wonder if Americans broadly would even care.

This thread is 💗💗💗 with amazing sentient linotype story link at the end!!!

Come dance with us at the Pink Pony Club by joining the Queer and Trans German Studies Research Cooperative. We have a mailing list and are getting together at the launch event next week, Wednesday, Feb 5, 10 a.m. PT www.ddgccollective.org/events-calen...

I remember reading something on the abundance of Art Nouveau-esque kitsch in AI images and the reasons behind it ( or maybe I’m hallucinating this myself)? If you have any leads, pls. share!

Happy we have a Data-Sitters Club essay in this @jepub.bsky.social special issue rethinking academic community, care, & collectivity, edited by @katinalynn.bsky.social. Absolutely love the data-sitters club 🤩

Yay for this special issue on collective and embodied scholarly communication being out in the world as of yesterday, with thanks to editor @katinalynn.bsky.social and the @jepub.bsky.social !
