For those keeping track, we are now at 2 weeks with no new R01s funded. Still only 18 new ("01") grants are fellowships/Ks, a few admin supplements, one R35, and one R03. Same 2-week period in 2024: 143 new grants were awarded and 41 R01s. Devastating.

More devastation for science and the science pipeline. Across the country people have graduate apps under review at these Universities, faculty (esp. new faculty) need to admit to help in their labs, and now that is cut off. The human toll of the chaos. It is beyond cruel and SO unnecessary.

➡️ NIH grants in '23 included $26B of direct costs and $9B of F&A = 26% of total costs or 35% of total direct costs. These are LOW overhead rates for any R&D-intensive industry. Academic biomedical research is an efficient bargain. ➡️ Every $1 of NIH support generates ~$2.50 of economic activity.

Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. So far, they have attracted more than 100 volunteers from some 30 states who are hoping to rally support for research as a public good. scim.ag/4328LAD

This is a critically important update. No new grants have been funded other than a few training awards. If we thought cuts to F&A were catastrophic, stopping all funding is a disaster.

I appreciate Katie's sharing this. We need to be sure that our representatives are aware of this continued obstruction of NIH funding (including additional canceling of study sections) and its consequences on employees in their state and on crucial health research. Our voices must be heard.

I've been stalking NIH Reporter to see if any new R01s fund at the 15% F&A rate, but... no new full R01s have funded since 2/10/2025, not a single R01 - across all of NIH - since 2/08. Only 18 grants have been newly funded - I am happy for the F31/F32/F30, R35, K99 trainees who have received $$.
