Okay so this wins the internet for me today—Anne Sproul Latimer over on Substack, talking about the founder of Grove Press: “Rosset had really shit in the frozen yogurt machine, metaphorically speaking, and no amount of financial deep-cleaning seemed to make the dessert edible again.”

Having a dinner party for 8 tonight and making short ribs which take 3 hours to cook. Made them yesterday… and forgot them in the oven… and destroyed them… and, what lesson can I take from this? No rest for the weary? For gods sake don’t let down your guard? This is karma?

Why is it just when you launch into some satisfying work your printer suddenly “disappears” and refuses to activate…? Why?!

I’m listening to “Miss you” by the Dynamics. Can anyone explain why it’s okay to mix certain artists and other times estates sue?? m.youtube.com/watch?v=bxhV...

So, this account is pure gold.

Manuscript #18: An introspective novel portraying Donald J. Trump as a failed poet who had only sought to amass power and govern as a way to take revenge on the publishing world that repeatedly rejected his attempts to release a poetry chapbook.

A pipe burst in my 120 yo house. It sounded like the house had been turned into a massive rain head shower. All the ceilings and walls have to come down, including the hand painted wallpaper from 1900 in the hallway.

Holy sh*t, just sent in my application for a government grant (haha, she says bitterly) and I almost lost my mind navigating the system. I deserve a medal.

This hangs by my desk and always makes me smile.

The silent place — day one… so damn good. Heart pounding.

We love going to the Salvation Army here in Key West—you never know what you’ll find. This time it was a pristine “food tote” from the 1960s

Happy Black History Month! Here is my favorite story about a Black American you may not know about: Robert Smalls. He commandeered a confederate ship and sailed himself, his family, and the other enslaved crew and their families to freedom. THROUGH waters controlled by the Confederacy.

From the New Yorker — this perfectly mirrors how I’m feeling on this beautiful day in paradise:

Why why why did I wait to ditch my book and FINALLY read The Big Swiss which, bafflingly, has been on my TBR list for years??? I’m the perfect ex of that marketing saying: you have to hit a person over the head approx a million times b4 they act on the pitch

I’m on vacation, day #4, and finally gave up the novel that was giving me little pleasure. Been reading “the Big Swiss” (Jennifer Beagin) for 5 minutes and I’m in Heaven. #reading #vacation #thebigswiss

Reading The Cider House Rules and struggling (around pg 130). Should I plow through??

I kept this screenshot assuming someday we might be asked to forget.

“No bully from within shall prevail over you,” that’s what the card I pulled said… more on that here:

Saw “The Last Showgirl” and found it very moving. But I woke up in the middle of the night with this question: is the scene real or imagined when Shelley rips up the costumes and then we see her huddled there with the two younger women?

So, I just saw The Last showgirl and 1) I feel melancholic (hardly surprising given my age) and 2) I ADORE Jamie Lee Curtis

EXTRAORDINARY story. Sorry, just had to shout.

Love this idea. So comforting.

It's Friday. And on Friday... DANCE, we must? 😩

An AI “romantic partner” who gives advice and has sex with you and treats you exactly the way you want. It’s happening. What do you think? www.nytimes.com/2025/01/15/t...

This reality scares me more than anything else. This is the outcome we should all be most scared of.

My feeling is that it's not unserious to spend time on the question of whether someone about to be hired for one of the most powerful jobs in the world drugged and raped a woman (as she alleges and he denies) www.nytimes.com/2025/01/15/o...

I love this idea from philosopher Marshall McLuhan, found in a New Yorker profile of Lorne Michaels: “whenever a new mass medium emerges, it frees up the medium that preceded it, allowing it to innovate.” (The commercial novel could be awfully free by now, if it wasn’t always trying to be a movie.)

Sorry to be so naive but I absolutely can’t fathom how Hegseth can be taken seriously as Secretary of Defense. A man who went to work drunk, forced himself on women and has literally zero experience running Billion Dollar operations???
