Utahns rallied Friday outside the Capitol in Salt Lake City to show their support for science as the Trump administration cuts funding for research and lays off federal employees that provide health and scientific data. (Photos by Francisco Kjolseth)

I was that woman! I have frequently told the story of how Jeremy responded after my second NIH rejection. He said, “Whatever you do, don’t stop spending. If you run out of startup, we’ll find more money for you.” I didn’t need it in the end, but knowing he had my back was huge. Thank you!

Newsflash: In a series of sweeping executive orders to declare something that is perceived preferable by Trump, π now equals 3. No more Pi Day on March 14. Also anything that won't use π=3 estimation will be illegible for federal support.

Almost 27 years ago I came to this country to seek answers for my future. I didn't really even know what my questions were. I vaguely wanted to accomplish something meaningful, build a good life for me and those around me. /1

That was one of the most disgusting speeches I have heard. It obviously represents a deep rooted anger from the conservatism, but what I am really worried is what the speech says about what our community has become. A deep deep resentment. I am truly truly worried about this country.

Meanwhile, the planet earth remains to be a place of astonishing wonder

Hey Salt Lake City! We will #StandUpForScience next Friday at the State Capitol! @standupforscience.bsky.social

I thought we'd have a lively discussion about the oval office outburst today at our family dinner but kids wanted to talk about why we shouldn't urinate on someone's front yard.

I've had more open and vulnerable conversations with my republican friends in the last month than I have had in my entire life. No longer am I considered the pleasant Asian nerd, but full of unpleasant opinions and paradox. It's better this way. I still try to keep it relatively respectful.

This is Dr. Lisa Berreau from Utah State University. She is the Vice President for Research there. Today at Capitol Hill, this woman reminded me of why I do what I do, and why it's worth fighting for those that have not found their voices. She is a leader. Be like Dr. Berreau. Go Aggies.

Last time I took my kid to Chick fulai was like 3 years ago. Happy Valentines.

I have a confession . . . I was an “overhead cost”. I was a beaker washer, agar plate pourer, research secretary. I was paid by “overhead cost” fees. Loved it. Those “overhead cost” jobs allowed this rural kid to become a physician. Please tag how #OverheadCostJob impact u.

I've been away from social media for the last several weeks, in an attempt to focus to regain control of financial circumstance for the lab. Meanwhile, I have not stayed silent, just switched ways to communicate to those around me about science and science funding.

I told everyone, the receptionist, the person who showed me to the seat, the dental assistant, the dentist, and the finance person about how things were going for me and the NIH. Also everyone at the waiting room heard me. Sorry, you asked me how things are going.

Seriously considering naturalizing even though it comes at the expense losing my Japanese citizenship.

Scientific discovery and advance is not, and never has been, “efficient”.

My mom was a fierce and devout Mormon. She beated all kinds of odds to give my siblings and I a chance to live what I often take for granted. 10 years after her passing, I try to honor her without living her religion. I am not sure what she would think of it.

In downtown Tokyo meeting up an old friend from my postdoc lab who now flies around the world consulting for big pharma. One of the best things in science is rekindling unbreakable old friendships built through training.

Today is the 30th anniversary of the Great Hanshin Awaji Earthquake. At 5:46am, I remember jolting up to an up and down motion I've never felt before. Many also passed from the fire after. The earthquake radically changed emergency response and building code laws to what it is in Japan today.

Thanks to @ebomba.bsky.social for sharing her story. My spouse and I also had kids during our PhDs, and felt unsure where to find guidance. There are many ways for each of us to find path for success. Her defense, while pregnant with our 3rd, was the proudest and most grateful moment in my life.
