Nashville's grammar cartoonist. When in doubt, trust Merriam-Webster. I like live music, baking cookies, and armadillos. And pretty much anything sparkly.

WOTD “happy returns” edition. Felicitations. As it turns out, March 19 is a significant day for a bunch of people I care about. If you are celebrating a birthday, anniversary, or anything else major today, I raise my coffee cup to you!

Dude. I can’t sleep all day if you keep waking me up.

Are ... are Teslas actually manufactured by Acme? That would explain a lot.... www.thedrive.com/news/tesla-a...

WOTD “seasonal insanity” edition. Bracketology. If you’re filling out a college basketball pool today, I wish you luck, no matter what selection method you employ. (I try to pick in a manner that ensures that nobody else in my pool will come in dead last. You’re welcome, coworkers.)

Went to a friend’s gig last night. Made a point to stop to get cash for cover charge, because tiny venue, not my first rodeo, etc. Door person: “Credit card or Venmo?” I smugly hand her my bills. “Oh. Sorry. I can’t take cash.” Did anybody see my walker? I must have left it around here somewhere…

I just submitted my sacrificial bracket, thereby guaranteeing that everybody else in the office will come in ahead of *somebody*. You're welcome, coworkers.

WOTD “luck o’ the Irish” edition. Blarney. You smooth-tongued devil, you. It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Be safe, have fun, don’t get pinched, and skip the green beer - blech.

WOTD “I come not to praise Caesar” edition. Ides. It marks, roughly, the middle of the month. This month, it’s tomorrow. It’s also an awful day to be a Roman general. (I embraced my inner 10yo boy for today's bloody artwork. You're welcome?)

‘Rhythm’ has two h’s and no vowels. Just remember: Rhythm Helps Your Two Hips Move Rhythm is also a dancer and a soul’s companion.

WOTD “break my bones” edition. Continuous vs. Contiguous. One involves constancy. The other involves adjacency. (Despite the continuous river border, Sticks and Stones have an open border policy between their contiguous nations and visit each other frequently!)

Michel Martin took no prisoners in her interview with Troy Edgar from Homeland Security about Mahmoud Khalil. A master class in dealing with an uncooperative interview subject. www.npr.org/2025/03/13/n...

I wrestled a very minor but frustrating Excel thing into submission, and now I feel like a tech genius.

WOTD “the reign in Spain” edition. If you have ever been tempted to “take the reigns” or “rein on somebody’s parade,” this one’s for you.

Nashville friends, a niche request: Who do you go to when you need fine jewelry restrung? I’m talking, like, grandmama’s pearls that are hand-knotted between each bead. Is there somebody good in town?

In the category of "everybody needs an editor," I just wrote a bio for somebody that mentioned his passion for the Las Vegas hickey team. 😳

WOTD “unfriendly skies” edition. Blindside. This one’s for anybody who was unpleasantly surprised this morning by the news that a beloved budget airline will no longer allow you to check bags for free. Grr.

Nooooooooo!!!

WOTD “give it a rest” edition. Vernal. Very many schools are taking a vernal vacation this week. If your family is in that group, I wish you a happy spring break. Please bring me back some beach.

WOTD “sunshine laws” edition. Standard Time vs. Daylight Saving Time. The time “springs forward” this weekend, so your Monday meeting will be held at 8 a.m. EDT, not EST. (If you like more light at the end of the day, Daylight Saving Time is the one you prefer.) (Also, it’s “saving,” not “savings.”)

WOTD” the BIs have it” edition. Biweekly. It means “every other week.” Except it can also mean “twice a week.” The easiest solution here is to rephrase for clarity. “Semiweekly” always means “twice a week.” And “every other week” means, well, every other week. Use your best judgment - I trust you!
