My hometown of Waterloo, Iowa canceled its African American Read-In after Trump’s anti-diversity directives. So i got together some writer friends and I’m holding it instead.

I say this to myself every single day. 💛

In just 48 hours, decades of global health progress have been ignored and put at risk. The U.S. terminated 90% of USAID foreign aid contracts—including lifesaving services once considered safe from the freeze. Let’s talk about why this matters and how we can fight back: youtube.com/shorts/U0mLg...

It Is Fun to Pretend That Hard Things Are Easy! A new online math platform promises to teach math 4x faster. Here is how! by Dan Meyer Right on, Dan - it's not real Math! #EduSky #iTeachMath danmeyer.substack.co...

New post by Bruce Lear: The purpose of college is to broaden knowledge and enhance critical thinking. An Iowa House bill would undermine those goals. www.bleedingheartland.com/2025/02/12/i...

The department tracks student achievement, manages college financial aid and sends K-12 schools money to support students with disabilities and lower-income communities, among other things.

The policy written into my syllabus about the use of generative AI in my composition and American literature classes.

Happy 2025 = 45², the first “square” year since 1936, the next being 2116. Its digit sum is also a square: 2+0+2+5 = 9 = 3². This last happened in 1681 and next occurs in 2304. And not since 900 has the year divided by the digit sum been a square too: 900/9=100 = 10² & 2025/9=225 = 15² QED. 👀🎉😁

2025 FACTS 🟦 first square number since 1936, last until 2116 🟦 first product of two two-digit squares since 1764, last until 2401 🟦 product of two different square pairs: 81 x 25 and 225 x 9. (So was 1764.) 🟦 only two prime factors: 3 and 5. The last year to consist of just 3s & 5s was 1875.

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but when people say that AI is their "thought partner" I wonder how to have a thought partner that cannot think (or feel, or communicate with intention). What appears to be thought is an illusion that only achieves meaning through the human interpreting it.

Isn't this an admission that they've been stealing as the justification for a claim that they ought to be allowed to continue stealing? "We couldn't have built this machine if we hadn't stolen the parts & designs, the machine is useful, therefore we must be allowed to continue." How about 'no'?

🎯 The powers-that-be want a teacherless future, especially for marginalized kids. 🎯 Each time we cede core parts of our work to AI, we help make that future more possible. 🎯 To the extent possible, teachers should organize against AI use for core teaching functions, especially in unionized states.

I’m so exhausted by decision-makers in education refusing to invest in long-term solutions. If you don’t have the resources to do it right, you don’t have the resources to do it at all.

5 years ago, my friend @mrtomrad.bsky.social tweeted this. Because I’m a holiday LOVER who had a classroom tree and array of holiday assignments, I paused and decided to poll my students to gauge their feelings. +

I really appreciate this commentary from Chuck Munter: "The myth(s) of the 'balanced' approach" to mathematics teaching #iteachmath #mtbos kappanonline.org/the-myths-of...

I've learned that this "new way" of doing long division has been called "new" since at least... 1706. Research at @librarycongress 😃 #iTeachMath #EinsteinFellows24 #math #education

Absolutely breathtaking. Take 3 minutes to watch this video. You will not regret it. #AmandaGorman #poetry #Wicked youtu.be/BPOVo3_pyos?...

Saw the new Wicked movie yesterday and it was excellent! As someone who loves the Broadway show (and has read the book), the movie largely stays true to the Broadway version, while adding depth & backstory to characters and taking advantage of the film format (not a pro shot). Can’t wait for part 2!

I taught a new group of kids last week and I got the sense they wanted answers to three questions ASAP. 1️⃣ Do you like me? 2️⃣ Do you like what you teach? 3️⃣ How much do you expect from me? I think every teacher answers those three questions in their first hour even if no one says anything out loud.

Looking forward to a week of supporting Elementary PSTs make sense of area formulas - I always enjoy when there’s multiple ways of deriving formulas and opportunities to connect representations with algebraic equations.
