My university employs more than 6000 people. Even if you simply don’t care about the 2,800 academics, there are far more administrative staff, technical staff, security guards, caterers, cleaners who would lose their jobs if we went under.

Reading Rachel Cusk's novel Arlington Park: Cusk really has an amazing ability to make almost every part of human experience seem absolutely disgusting

1. Because this issue is critical, but has received remarkably little coverage, here's a thread pulling out the key themes from my article yesterday, on the Planning and Infrastructure Bill, which puts decades of environmental protections to the torch. 🧵 www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

Every writer against genocide belongs in their union. The Society of Authors does not stand for a free Palestine. Not yet. Amid Israel’s destruction of libraries, bookshops, printing presses and publishing houses in Gaza, the SoA’s lack of solidarity is driving members to leave the union. [1]

I feel like we need to keep saying this because it’s so insane: This is a legal U.S. resident who has been detained for over a month now for his political opinions.

Whenever "gender criticals" organise a protest it's thirty people max. And that includes the actual Nazis that turn up to support them. This rally for trans rights was organised in a couple of days and there are protests like this in cities and towns over the whole country

I couldn't go as I'm ill but I'm very proud that my son went with his dad on his first march today in London for trans rights 💖

Looking forward to being a part of this excellent online program next week, organized by Liz Losh. @ritaraley.bsky.social land I will be in dialogue about our work on the post-AI (and -Trump) university. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

So the university that employs me is definitely making me redundant via non-renewal of a fixed-term contract (after 3 years and 8 months). Anyone got any suggestions of where I can find a new job since there aren't any jobs in universities any more?

Relevant always but particularly relevant today: 'the attempted stabilizing of identity is inherently a disciplinary project’ - Leo Bersani

Trans women are women and no court judgement can change that. Without wanting to diminish the negative effect that legal oppression has on trans lives, there is no reason why lawyers and judges are qualified to make this argument over actual experts in the field.

Auditors have raised serious concerns about Coventry University's financial future, putting hundreds of jobs at risk. UCU is calling for urgent transparency. Staff and students deserve clarity now. bit.ly/44m741F

Curtailing people’s ability to read widely and carefully, to locate, assess, and compare different sources for themselves, and to write in their own voice about what they find and what it means, is arguably more effective than censorship. It is also one of the most obvious effects of generative AI.

Destroying universities to artificially repress immigration numbers. Is there any better example of how the brutalising work of policing Britain's borders is contagious - a kind of violence that eventually bleeds into the social body stripping away rights and undermining security for everyone?

Delighted my article on The Scottish Network Novel in @c21literature.bsky.social is now up! Open access and everything! I'm pretty pleased with this one. c21.openlibhums.org/article/id/1...

The core trilma here remains the same - the govt needs to accept one of three things: high student migration, higher domestic student fees (or higher taxes to fund universities) or university bankruptcies. Those are the only options, given where we are. Pick one.

If anyone has a toddler obsessed with 'Baby Shark' just know a singer called Desmond Dennis has a slow jams version of it that makes it much more bearable

Today UK authors are protesting against Meta for stealing our work to train their AI model. Authors earn an average of £7000 per year, we are not rich, and yet a trillion dollar company decided it didn’t want to license our work fairly as it was “too expensive” Theft is not a valid alternative.
