Decolonize your Pride. What does that look like? It looks like decentering yourself in defiance of current oppressive structures. It looks like scrutinizing where you uphold white colonial ideology within your Pride — your parties, your panels, your parades.

Want to really honor Jonathan Joss’ legacy? Decolonize your Pride. Start there.

I think we’ve reached a boiling point when it comes to ICE. Today in Minneapolis, a militarized task force raided the beloved Lake Street taqueria, Las Cuatro Milpas—and the community was not having it. Agents from ICE, the DEA, FBI, ATF, IRS and HHS rolled up looking like they were ready for war.

White people ruined Native land and our mental health then turn around and say because we have mental health issues, it’s actually okay to kill us. Make it make sense. Make it make sense.

Wish I could join this one — alas, I am in taxi at Oslo Airport 😆 come lurk with me in chat and see what Trouble Brews 👀

On Sunday, my friend, Jonathan Joss was murdered and it took me a minute to find the words... Like so many of our lives, Jonathan's existed at the powerful intersections of Indigeneity, queerness, visibility, and vulnerability. He was fierce, funny, flawed, and real in every way that mattered.

WaPo: Doing their WaPo/White-Po thing and sanitizing the death of an Indigenous gay man murdered via hate crime 🫡 God Bless Smerica

The pain and the grief in my heart and chest and body is just impossible to describe 🏳️‍🌈❤️‍🩹🪶

Please remember to capitalize Native when talking about Native people. Please ❤️‍🩹

Arresting the killer is not enough justice for the loss of Jonathan Joss’ life. His whole San Antonio neighborhood is complicit. The police are complicit. Texas is complicit. America is complicit. And *you* are complicit if you think 1 arrest does ANYTHING to stop this from happening to us again.

This was a hate crime in a series of hate crimes Jonathan and his husband Tristan dealt with. Neighbors said he was behaving "erratically" but who wouldn't react with such extreme emotion in this situation? He was murdered on the first day of Pride. Indigenous people are not numbers. Say his name.

It says a lot about where we’re at in this country that a beloved voice actor was murdered by his homophobic neighbor and every headline is still running passive defense for his killer, doing everything not to call this hate crime what it was. These are scary times. RIP to Jonathan Joss.

There is more than sufficient evidence to open a federal hate crime case under 18 USC 249. This is precisely the type of crime the Shepard-Byrne ACT was passed to permit the feds to prosecute. Important to watch what DOJ does here. www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/...

Saying “This is why Pride Month matters” is not the right response to Jonathan Joss’s brutal murder and torturing at the hands of his San Antonio neighborhood. Pride Month will not save Indigenous Queer and Two-Spirit kinfolk.

Could you imagine this happening to NPH and no major news outlets recognize it as a hate crime? WTAF? Why are Indigenous bodies treated this way? Why are we treated like SCUM within the LGBTQIA+ community? Why do we have to fight even in death to have one goddamn ounce of justice in OUR HOMELAND?

Please, don’t let Jonathan Joss’s story die down. Please, don’t do this to Indigenous people on Pride month. Please, recognize his whole neighborhood was in on his premeditated death and killed his dogs and burned his childhood home. PLEASE REALIZE this is a hate crime against a gay AND Native man.

Jonathan Joss's death for Natives is like having one of your favorite white actors die. Now imagine that was the ONLY representation you had growing up. And it was animated. And we lost him from a HATE crime. In the most violent and tragic way possible. We deserve so much better than this.

Jonathan Joss was MURDERED. Words matter here. He was MURDERED. it was a HATE CRIME because he is a gay Indigenous man. Say those words. Do not dance around it. He wasn't "killed in a shooting." He was murdered in a hate crime.

Jonathan Joss was a comedic powerhouse. He brought me joy every time I saw him on screen. He was murdered by someone who hated him for being gay, and half the media stories out there don't even mention it.

Jonathan Joss was cold-bloodedly murdered simply for the fact that he loves another man. He was looking at the remains of his dog who had been decapitated and left for him to see. A terrible crime. The media not calling it what it is - HATE CRIME - is also a crime.

I feel completely heartbroken over the murder of Jonathan Joss. A gay, Native man murdered in cold blood saving his husband’s life from the hatred of another. The rage is endless. The pain is endless. They keep hurting us. It has to fucking *stop*.

Jonathan Joss' death is a tragedy. John Redcorn was the only representation I had as a kid. I once even did a recording with him and he's now the 2nd Native man I’ve known that has died from gun violence this year. The other being my dad. Natives are the most likely to be victims of violent crimes.

Jonathan Joss was Comanche and Apache and an openly gay actor. He was murdered while looking at the remains of his dogs at his own house that was burnt down. The killer yelled homophobic slurs before shooting him. This is the real world consequences of the hatred that the right commodifies

Jonathan Joss (Comanche, White Mountain Apache) did not simply die from a gunshot. He was murdered in a homophobic, racist hate crime by his former neighbors. He died saving his partners life. Honor his legacy-- both queerness and Indigeneity are inextricable to why he was targeted.

I haven't stopped crying since I learned the news. It's just devastating, upon devastating, upon devastating. The horror, the overwhelm, the grief, the rage. The injustice.

With Jonathan Joss's hate crime death, I'm having severe flashbacks to Nex Benedict here, and not in a good way. And Nex was Native too. Please start to put two-and-two together. Our queerness and Nativeness - and their struggle - are not separate. Your queerness must relate to ours.

This land is Native land. Being Queer here is NATURAL and has always been, since the immemorial. The current infection, brought by the occupier and settler, is the blight. TRUE Pride? DECOLONIZING. THAT is the cure to the poison. RETURN. Return. Return.

Please don't just say "Jonathan Joss's death was a hate crime THIS IS WHY WE NEED PRIDE MONTH." No. Jonathan Joss was queer and Comanche. This hate crime was because he was gay and Native. The two are intrinsically linked. THIS IS WHY WE NEED TO DISMANTLE COLONIAL AND CAPITAL AMERICA.

Been sobbing on & off since I heard the news about Jonathan Joss. You don't understand. It's so, so rare to have an Elder in Hollywood. We have a literal handful to look to, to learn from. Redcorn is often referenced by Natives as the only authentic (& funny) characters we saw growing up on TV

I really hope the creators of King of The Hill as well as Amy Poehler, Adam Scott, and other names from Parks & Rec use their voices to honor Jonathan Joss and use their power to bring to light the horrendous hate crime that happened to him during Pride. So often, Natives are forgotten.

Dear Americans: trigger warnings are a good way to brace oneself from potential harm. But at what point does it shield you from it? Native people have some of the highest rates of homicide, sexual assault, murder... If you're a settler or guest here, you have a responsibility to make others aware.

Please take a moment to read this from Jonathan Joss’s husband. It’s heartbreaking. And having read news reports, the media at large are completely covering up years of hate crimes this poor couple endured. And today it resulted in the brutal murder of a beautiful artist.
