ICYMI: A rare statement from CJ Roberts on judicial impeachments after Trump called for the removal of D.C. fed judge who ruled against deportations this weekend. Top congressional Rs still cagey about whether this will lead to any actual impeachment inquiry in the House.

Reminder, I not only provide jokes about autopens, I also have a very cute cat

Did the founders contemplate autopens when creating the pardon power? Absolutely can’t wait to hear your thoughts

I believe this is the first post-Dobbs arrest of someone allegedly providing abortions.

I will simply note that whoever wrote this statement used “aircraft carrier” as if it were a synonym for “airplane.”

Ah I see we’ve begun the debate over the intricacies of constitutional crises early this week, wonderful

A federal court’s jurisdiction does *not* stop at the water’s edge. The question is whether the *defendants* are subject to the court order, not *where* the conduct being challenged takes place. Were it otherwise, the government could act lawlessly overseas and courts would be powerless to stop it.

🚨BREAKING: It seems very clear that the Administration decided not to abide by the court's order. The question now is what will the judge do. Does he proceed with contempt or something short of that to defuse. Upping the stakes is the fact that the AG and her senior staff signed this notice.

Texas legislators considering a bill that would put all public university course curricula and faculty hiring in the hands of ruling party political appointees and politicians, effectively ending academic freedom.

I’m reading Careless People because it’s genuinely an incredible read. Whatever your reason, I recommend picking up a copy

Fabian Schmidt, New Hampshire resident with a green card, has been „violently interrogated“ and detained with no access to his medications by immigration officers at Logan Airport and is being held by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at the Donald W. News: Journalists at Voice of America were just informed that they’ve been put on administrative leave. Two people there told me this went to all fulltime employees. “From what we can tell, VOA is effectively shut down from this moment.”

SCOOP --> Trump's State Department quietly terminated a contract that was in the process of transferring evidence of Russian abductions of Ukrainian kids to European law enforcement, two sources familiar with the situation tell me. Details here: newrepublic.com/article/1927...

President Trump’s slash-and burn overhaul of federal funding should have ignited an existential crisis for lawmakers, since they hold the power of the purse. Instead, it may be up to the courts to mend the constitutional wounds. @kelseyreichmann.bsky.social www.courthousenews.com/courts-could...

Schumer appeared to close the door on a Democratic effort to rein in Trump’s controversial spending freezes—leaving the courts as the sole backstop against the impoundment of appropriated funds. @courthousenews.bsky.social www.courthousenews.com/courts-could...

Judge Alsup just now, on Ezell's evasion: "The government has tried to frustrate the judge’s ability to get at the truth of what happened here. It set forth a sham declaration, then withdrew it, then substituted another. That’s not the way it works in the U.S. District Court."

DOJ is short staffed and has a rising workload. They just sent a signal that no one should grant them a courtesy filling extension because they use that extension as an opportunity to further injure the opposing party instead of working on their briefs.

Pause to reflect on this: Perkins Coie is a billion-dollar law firm that employs more than 1,000 attorneys. The firm's partner swore under oath that Trump's EO puts its "very existence at risk," a point echoed by their outside counsel in open court. storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.us...

NEW in @51st.news: House Republicans just voted to defund D.C. police and schools. As part of a spending bill to avert a federal government shutdown, they could force D.C. to slash $1.1 billion out of its budget, and no one understands really why. 51st.news/house-republ...

Highly recommend David's latest book, "Murder the Truth." Essential reading as Trump and company try to silence journalists.

The CR's effect on DC is a five alarm fire. By treating the DC as a federal agency & compelling the city to return to 2024 spending, Congress is mandating that DC cut its budget--*its own tax dollars*--by almost 20%. None of this $ will be refunded to the fed gov; it was never theirs.

BREAKING: Perkins Coie sues Trump, seeks TRO, over last week's executive order targeting the law firm — which I wrote about over the weekend at Law Dork (www.lawdork.com/p/trump-test...). As was reported Monday, Williams & Connolly is representing Perkins Coie in the litigation.
