I agree with this, in-person exams are not the panacea for AI-cheating, it's the Bunny Colvin solution - just moving the problem outside the area we police...

For Pride we wrote a thing about our Rainbow Office Hours initiative, where LGBTQ staff hold drop-in hours, and why it's more important than ever that our queer students and colleagues, but particularly those who are trans and non-binary, know who they are safe with. #AcademicSky #EduSky

Richard Harris’ brother, Ivan, used to run the shop in my estate when I was a kid, Richard would be in there for a chat every now & then, as kids we didn’t know who he was; now when the actor who played George on Glenroe was in there one Sunday the excitement was off the charts…

These must be just centrist pograms then

I got literally BEATEN to the ground WITH A TRICOLOUR almost 5 years ago. Mick Clifford went to the next far-right protest & wrote his most derided opinion piece. He never expressed horror at this use of "our flag" as an actual weapon. But NOW he wants the flag back. 😂

This is a documentary on the Irish channel TG4 about how me and my family became refugees in Ireland and of the toll the Russian invasion has taken on our lives. It's in Irish with English subtitles. Available worldwide! www.tg4.ie/en/player/ca...

I've been thinking a lot about the "LLMs are weird computers" frame for thinking about LLMs and it's clarifying for things like this.

Not taking anything away from Senator Padilla because he was treated atrociously But I JUST want to remind everyone that the Congresswoman LaMonica McIver, a Black woman, was just indicted for just asking questions at an ICE detention center in her state Keep that same energy of support for her

Meta launched a stand-alone AI app and now it is full of sensitive content from Facebook users who appear to be unaware that they have made their conversations public: www.businessinsider.com/mark-zuckerb...

there’s a reason bluesky is a retirement home for millennial posters - we grew up before algorithms and were not used to having content shoved in our faces unasked for we chose to click on those terrible threads ourselves

Replacing US support to Ukraine will be hard but Europe has options to mitigate the impact, says @lscazzieri.bsky.social. ➡️Buying equipment for Kyiv from the US ➡️Ramping up production in Europe & Ukraine ➡️Investing in missing capabilities. 🔗 ow.ly/26ua50W8au6

A really good question, why *are* trans people so rarely given a voice in Irish media? Oh I see, that's not what you meant.

"The real threat posed by generative AI is not that it will eliminate work on a mass scale, rendering human labour obsolete. It is that, left unchecked, it will continue to transform work in ways that deepen precarity, intensify surveillance, and widen existing inequalities."

It's almost as if this is what crypto currencies are designed for.

I gave an interview to The Clare Champion about my new book, "Unfinished Empire". In my native county, we are all on first name terms.

Cycling in Dublin 1974. That's over 50 years ago. 😱 But it was the winner back then too! @feljin.ie @dublincycling.bsky.social @irishcycle.com www.youtube.com/watch?v=GX4M...

Still waiting for the article that’s like “these right wing militia members are in a bubble and it would be healthier if they exposed themselves to left wing ideas”

A thread in which Marc nails the vibe of Brendan the Dublin AI guide.

is the entire thing a weird troll? fascinated by some of the choices on display there - this one is ideal if the message you want to send is "I fucked the groom, and I'll try to do it again tonight if you're not careful"

In a democracy, *should* the question we ask ourselves be "Am I better off?" What about "are other people better off?" "Are the laws fair?" "Are we more secure?" "Are we trashing the planet for the future?" The left, in particular, should be really wary of transactional framings of democracy. 1/3

this is like drake and kendrick lamar but they're both drake

I think this is such a major driver of AI use in university assessments. And also just a real… disconnection between why we think students are here (to learn about history!) and why students think they are here (to get good grades, to get a job)

A definition of White British which, aside from everything else, includes Gerry Adams but excludes King Charles.

Why is climate mitigation too expensive, but AI is an arms race to burn resources?

You might need local context to understand the double meaning here. 🙏

all I see is this

Fully agree with Blayne here, this message is tone deaf at best, there is no way the US is a safe venue for many colleagues, particularly trans colleagues & those who require visas, @isanet.bsky.social really needs to reflect on whether it’s the International Studies Association or a national org!

Nature ran a piece finding that 25 million people could die as a result of ending USAID. This puts Trump and Musk in the category of the most brutal leaders of the 20th century in terms of unnecessary lives lost. www.nature.com/articles/d41...

I merely note “Rob’s trade-war column” scans perfectly into The Undertones’ “My Perfect Cousin”. Just saying.

This should be interesting. www.eventbrite.com/e/west-cork-...

My new book "Unfinished Empire" was launched by the Minister for European Affairs and Defence who said: "Let us all take stock of the Professor’s work, and gain valuable insights from it, on how we can ensure that Putin’s imperial ambitions are never realised" More here: www.dcu.ie/humanities-a...

Whoever made this deserves a medal.

*intake of breath* Ciaran Mullooly used AI to write a letter to Ursula von der Leyen about EU aid to Gaza, quoting Swedish House Mafia and including a story about a fake girl. *collapses* www.thejournal.ie/ciaran-mullo...

It's over two centuries since bicycles became a familiar site in Eurooe. It's taken that long for CarBrain opinion havers in our pundit ecosystem to notice the low amount of noise they make and declare that a "cultural problem". Premium content as always.

"A well-delivered lecture isn’t primarily a delivery system for information. It is an ignition point for curiosity, all the better for being experienced in an audience." "Tech evangelists may be dazzled by the promise of AI, but two well-designed new studies — one in China and one by a leading AI company — signal trouble ahead."
