After facilitating the de-legitimacy of the Supreme Court and the return of an insurrectionist to the Presidency, Mitch McConnell declares his work done and his departure from the Senate after his current term. Rumors that he ended his speech saying "So long, suckers!" have not been confirmed.

Sadly, the arc of the moral universe does not bend toward justice. Indeed, to call the moral universe an arc defies basic geometry. The phrase is aspirational--an aspiration I share--but the history of human morality is a zig-zag through eras of good and evil, with evil presently ascendant.

Little known fact: Before Presidents Day, if you bought a mattress in the middle of February, you had to pay full price.

Tomorrow is Presidents Day--our annual celebration of Washington, Lincoln, and the notion of a presidency committed to the preservation, protection, and defense of our Constitution. In other words, a celebration of what used to be.

Hmm...let's see. Can we find a way to use these same words and sound less imperious, maybe a tad more, oh, I don’t know…American? How about, "He who does not violate any law saves his country"? Whaddya think, DJT? Care to give that a try?

McConnell gets zero credit for his "no" votes on Gabbard and RFK,Jr. He cast those votes only when they had no effect or impact, and only when they required no courage. His legacy will reflect that in the face of Trump, whenever it mattered, McConnell was a coward.

Props to the pope for scolding DJT on immigration. Yes, Trump thrives on scolds, they’re a platform from which to spew the defiance and anger that feed his rabid base, but it's a food chain doomed to expire on the choke of its bile. To that end, props to the pope and all who refuse to stay silent.

From a piece I wrote during his first term, no less apropos (more so?) today: So minions gild his droppings As his minders bide his whims— And lonely, In the harbor, Lady’s fabled torch bedims.

On February 17, some states will celebrate Presidents Day (no apostrophe), some will celebrate President's Day (singular possessive apostrophe), and some will celebrate Presidents' Day (plural possessive apostrophe). Informed of this, the current president asked, "What's an apostrophe?"

An important first-person account from someone inside OPM:

MAGA morality: Put thousands of federal employees on leave, cut aid that sustains countless lives, demonize your opponents, and then enjoy the suffering of your enemies. But then - when one DOGE worker is fired for vicious racism -say, "Where's the grace and mercy in this country?"

It's Super Bowl Sunday. As the day progresses, many will enjoy this annual ritual, and life may seem normal, but remember: Outside the cocoon of this Super Bowl Sunday, all is not normal. Political upheaval threatens our nation and the world, so don't be fooled by the ritual. All is not normal.

When asked to explain his ire toward The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the president responded, "An entire center just for performers named Art?! It's a waste! Carney's dead, Garfunkel's a relic! Who's left?" www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/u...

When told he was acting childishly, the president responded, “I know you are, but what am I?” www.nytimes.com/live/2025/02...

Just a matter of time before he tries to rename it The Trump Center, because of course. www.nytimes.com/2025/02/07/u...

The 17 Across clue in today’s NYT crossword was “Air quality org.” I immediately entered “EPA”, then thought, hmm…is it still?

In a world growing ever more dystopian, pockets of kindness and compassion still exist.

Unlike all those other times when Johnson refused to stand with Trump on an issue.

Trump's loony scenario wasn't about nation-building, it was about nation-taking. Big difference.

The White House is preparing an executive order for three Big Macs, three large fries, three chocolate shakes, and a Diet Coke. Schumer lambastes the order, vows to fight it by issuing a defiant statement calling it "very, very not so good."

With the ceaseless sturm and drang of Trump's dismantling of American democracy, how are we as a society supposed to stay up-to-date on the Blake Lively/Justin Baldoni dispute?

Most Repub Senators will vote to confirm Gabbard as part of their lock-step, thoughtless obedience to DJT. Susan Collins' support of Gabbard is worse because she claims it's the result of careful thought and consideration.

People I know--smart people--are convinced that Trump will so alienate the public that the Dems will win back the House and Senate in 2026. These people are assuming we'll have elections in 2026.

Remember when pundits, political scientists, and "experts" of all sort scoffed in 2016 when Bernie Sanders insisted that a "political revolution" was possible? Sure seems like we're in the midst of one now, though hardly the one Bernie sought.

Three cheers for this man! www.nytimes.com/2025/02/02/u...

The Ground Hog emerged this morning, and what he saw, so terrified him that he turned around, went back into his hole, and started frantically burrowing to Canada.

Philosophical question in this era of social media: If I don't have a podcast, do I exist?

And the award for understatement of the week (month? year? century?) goes to The New York Times (a paper I love) whose editorial board writes that the first two weeks of Trump's presidency should have us "worried." www.nytimes.com/2025/02/01/o...

In the Nixon era, this would be called an administrative massacre. In the Trump era, it’s called Friday. www.nbcnews.com/politics/nat...

When cruelty and hatred are naked and open, indifference abets evil. Pay attention to those who stay silent, and don’t be one of them. Find your voice and speak it loudly. Condemn cruelty and hatred. Defend generosity and compassion. As a response to evil, silence is fuel. Don’t be silent.

Trump blames DEI for mid-air crash because crash was a bad thing that happened, so of course.

I'm new to BlueSky, so maybe someone reading this can answer: When my home page says I have 10 followers, is that 10 million or 10 billion?

Someone told me I tend to have a negative outlook. I thought about it and decided, hmm, that really sucks.

Trump just issued an executive order downsizing the House of Representatives, and requiring that it now be called the Apartment of Representatives.

Is it redundant to say "I'm just saying" when you're saying something?

I just woke up from a nap. Dreamed I was napping. Feel doubly refreshed.

I think my doctor is trying to kill me. He put me on a high fiber diet, but the fibers are nylon and polyester.

Little known fact: Fitzgerald first titled his book “The Good Gatsby.” Changed it only after unimpressed agent said, “Eh, could be better.”
