I wear a lot of different hats. Some of them even fit me. Formerly: LIS, Twilio, Microsoft. You may also know me from books, plays, and music. I do too much.

Thank you to all the incredible people who tirelessly maintain and work on FOSS projects. Most of us will have got our start coding, decompiling, or general-needing using FOSS, or as a result of FOSS. For it to exist, there have to be people willing to give up time to make it. So, thank you.

Stop romanticising the past challenge 2025.

Very proud not to be "a real techie"

the rise of the fascist nerds was anticipated by Ellen Ullman's 1995 essay "Out of Time: Reflections on the Programming Life."

An important and moving read. Should be mandatory for anyone who works in tech at the NHS - too many times, poorly-thought-out algorithms and flowcharts ruin lives. Not one single death because of a poorly designed system is acceptable. NHS tech workers hold lives in their hands.

I'd like to share the abject satisfaction I just got from eating an avocado. It was incredible.

I know that life imitates art and all that, but did anyone tell the universe that some art is satire and didn't need to become real life?

Lovely story about a local community led effort making a real difference to the environment. It also happens to be my borough www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Are you as open as the great Ususal?

Sat in an actual real cafe in which one of my not actually real characters works, and in which several scenes in my next book are set. I thought I was being unfair in my description of the terrible service in the book. I was not.

Allow me to share the best joke I’ve ever heard, courtesy of my friend’s six-year-old. Him: “knock knock” Me: “who’s there? Him: “meatball.” Me: “meatball who?” Him: “meatball Sue!”

Me, writing a chapter where one of my characters is on the train: "... but they closed that station in 1962 and so the branch line she was now on was originally part of a different one. The train tilted, as was common of this particular type of locomotive..." I... think I like trains.

So interesting to see all the “Swartz was bad, actually” comments on this article. I wonder if decades of paywalling has led today’s youth to see being charged for knowledge as normal and fair.

It’s almost as though we should not have made it so the city was full of offices and lacking homes

It’s banjo maintenance day! #NotAEuphamism

Genuinely good read.

A tiring but fun couple of days at #soocon25 in London. Many sources opened, several requests pulled, and nary a git in sight.

Hey @samuel.bsky.team & other bsky devs - what gives? Incredible places like @vaginamuseum.bsky.social don’t deserve these limiting labels - can we make Bluesky a home for museums and uncensored history?

I have made six unrelated jokes about eggs this morning. I think my body is trying to tell me something. #NeedEgg #OmletteTime

Some of the best artwork I've had in my life came from Mali. From drawing characters in my books and stories, through to creating some of the best artwork of 'me' at a time I wasn't sure who I was, her work is brilliant and beautiful and surreal. Please support her work & check out her store.

Stop making alcohol a central part of your conference challenge 2025.

Lovely buzz at #soocon25 in London today. Lots of talk about open governments - interesting to see that open source is taken increasingly seriously in policy setting.

‼️ The State Department has REMOVED TQIA+ on their page of recommendations for queer travelers. This page yesterday said "LGBTQIA+" and now just says "LGB". The federal government is trying to erase trans people from existence.

Busy helping set up for the @openuk.bsky.social #StateOfOpenCon starting tomorrow. Looks set to be a fun event!

Seen people asking how they can migrate their playlists if they leave Spotify. Someone recommended this service that can move them to a whole bunch of different services: www.tunemymusic.com

Happy #Caturday from... wait, where's he hiding? All I see here are plushies.

It’s been a horrible week for trans people. I’ve made my trans short story book Transliteration free for 5 days so enjoy it, read the stories you like, leave the rest. Share it around. Love you all. ❤️ www.amazon.com/Transliterat...

It’s the first day of Black History Month. It’s also the first day of LGBT History Month. The more connected the world gets, the more annoying it is that the UK and US have alternated LGBT History Month and Black History Month. It confuses people, and feels like we have to shout over each other.

Can't believe it's been two years! Still so proud to have worked with some wonderful people to bring this important LGBTQ+ history book to life. #LGBTHistoryMonth

This is the correct answer.
